WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Summer league champs: The Weasleys

Congratulations to The Weasleys, champions of Beijing Ultimate Summer League 2011.

The Weasleys, however, lost its final regular-season game to The Raging Boehners and needed a soft-capped victory by Fei Pan Da over Fuzz Bullets to enter finals. Once there, both teams fought hard for the championship, but The Weasleys wanted it a little more and prevailed 13-10.

Afterwards, we went to Kro's Nest, and much later, Kevin's show at Luga's. I may or may not have gotten really drunk because it was my birthday.

Hey guys,
I've got the English version of the Dalian Beach Ultimate recently, but don't have much time for internet access recently, so here's the information in the attachment. How many players do you think will go for it this July 23-24th? I'm really not sure if I will go for it but if there's enough players in for it from Shanghai, I would love to go and have some sandy catches.
- Sorry Wang, I've been travelling around Shanghai and Zhejiang recently intensively and don't have much time taking care of my emails. There was some 20+ players from Shanghai expressed that they were interested for the Dalian Beach Ultimate during our Spring League, but since I forward the invitation from Dalian to the SUPA, there has not been any response. As I know, there are many of the Shanghai players are leaving for home during the summar and most of thought the Beach Ultimate was going to be in August as we learned from last year's Dalian Tourney, until you told us the dates about week ago. So, I guess there are some misunderstanding of the dates and many people are already on vacations. But anyways, I think we'll still have a Shanghai team coming for the Dalian Ultimate Tourney this September.

Tomorrow marks the exciting first week of the 2011 Beijing Ultimate Summer League. We are meeting at 12:45 pm in front of Ginza Mall on the southeast corner of Dongzhimen (Exit C from Line 2 subway). Vans will be first-come, first-serve, though we'll make sure spillovers get into cabs. No player left behind. Car-pooling is cheap and good for the environment. 15 rmb per ride (30 rmb round-trip).

If you insist on going by yourself, here are directions to the fields:

China Admin. of Sports for Persons with Disabilities (real grass fields).
Go on JingCheng Expressway (京承高速）heading northeast. Take Exit 6 (火沙路), then turn right. Go straight until you hit LuoMa Rotary ("roundabout," in Americanspeak). Exit roundabout at Tianbei Highway (天北路), then go straight until you pass ShunPing Lu (顺平路). Stay on the left once you pass this road. About 50 meters after you pass this road, you'll see a small white sign with brown writing: "China Admi. Sports for Persons with Disabilities" [sic]. You want to turn left here and keep going until you hit the entrance of the complex. Go straight after entering until you see the soccer field -- we're on the left side of it.

Expect it to be about 94 rmb from Dongzhimen, so arrange car-pooling accordingly. Save your receipt.

We play from 2 to 5 pm. Here is what you need for Week 1:

--WATER. There are no concessions, so bring WATER. Otherwise you will die.
--One white and one non-white shirt. Guessing you'll want short-sleeve.
--We're on grass, so feel free to pull out those cleats.
--Money: if you haven't paid me yet.

We'll let you know your team tomorrow.

Potlatch is happening this weekend, where Beijing Ultimate's Kevin Reitz and HHH will be tearing it up, I'm sure. Former Beijing Ultimate players Reid and Julia, who are based in Portland, will compete, as will, I'm sure, Zahlen and the other Titcombs. The best way of getting to these new fields is taking a van / car-pooling with us from Dongzhimen. Meet in front of the McDonald's at Ginza Mall (Subway Line 2, Dongzhimen stop, Exit C). We received word earlier this week that are trusty fields at Happy Valley are being demolished. Very sad day for Beijing Ultimate. We'll have a retrospective of Happy Valley up next week.

In the meantime, disc goes on, and Saturday's hat tourney / clinic has shifted to a new, very temporary location (we're scouting grass fields for summer league).

Hakuna Matata, Beijing Ultimate, cause it's summertime, meaning the 5th annual Beijing Ultimate Summer League (BUSL), themed "Once Upon a Summer in Beijing," is upon us.

We're kicking things off with a July 2 beginners/intermediate CLINIC (noon to 1 pm, FREE) and hat tournament (1-5 pm) at Happy Valley (directions below). One van will leave from Dongzhimen at 11 am (15 rmb), with another bus leaving at noon (15 rmb).

If you're interested in the clinic, please email Alicia (see sidebar for address). The clinic will be separated by gender, with the focus being on BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE women.

This year's SUMMER LEAGUE will be six weeks, with an extended final week for a 3rd-place game and finals (free unlimited beer will be available that day (Sat., Aug.13)). All games will be at Happy Valley (directions below).

Those interested in summer league (please see PRICING below) need to send me an email with the following information by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, July 6 (but sooner the better):

Here are directions for HAPPY VALLEY fields:

Take East Fourth Ring Road going south and tell driver to get off at the Shi Ba Li Dian Qiao exit (十八里店桥), i.e. Exit No. 16. At the first bridge, i.e. Shi Ba Li Dian NORTH Qiao (or "qiao bei"), make a U-turn. Newly rechristened Loveseat, Kevin and Jon Kelly played a two-hour gig at Luga's on Saturday night, and it was pretty great. Short video clip here:

It was also Sam's birthday. His face newly rechristened after a bar fight, Sam got, predictably, wasted once again.

On Friday, some kids had a naked party. I won't go into details.

On Sunday, we went to the pool at Chad's. Our winnings from the Nanjing Open have officially been (well) used.

Tuesday, a bunch of Big Brother ladies, in celebration of their season, "got awesome" at Enoterra's ladies night.

Dray and Tory continue to terrorize Beijing -- Great Leap, Yunnan restaurant, El Nido -- and the biggest thunderstorm Beijing's seen in several decades washed through last night. Trivia still got 42 people though. Amazing.

Big Brother will have a boozy Chinese dinner (BCD) tomorrow to celebrate the end of its spring/summer season, which ended with the team -- you may have heard -- winning Shanghai Open last weekend. Kevin Reitz has recently posted a blog about the event titled "How Beijing Owned Shanghai in 2011." The party was his "Opus."

Meanwhile, Gina of Korea and Zahlen visited this week, and Korea's Dray and Tori are in town.

*Ultimate Frisbee in North Korea. The most interesting sports thing you've ever done.*

The cost will be 890 Euros. This includes flights from and back to Beijing, tourist stuff Saturday and Monday, pizza, all other food that isn't pizza, hotel, fields, entertainment. Visa fee (not optional, 50 Euro) and ticket to the mass games (optional, but would be weird not to go: 80, 100, 150 or 300 Euro options) will be extra. North Korean microbrewed beer will be extra, but cheap. (and good)

The itinerary includes two full days and three nights of touring. The tournament is a one day hat. We leave Beijing early Saturday and return early Tuesday. Participants should be in Beijing by Friday afternoon in order to collect visas get final info at Koryo Tours.

All nationalities except South Korean can participate.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Shanghai 2011 champions: Big Brother!

Big Brother ended a seven-year winless drought at international tournaments by winning Shanghai Open 2011, trailing only once all weekend (in the semifinals vs. Korea). The team from Beijing beat Team Philippines 15-10 in the finals, with its O-line committing only three turnovers all game (no breaks). Tao was selected finals MVP along with TP's Pia Ybanez (who has a tag on this blog because she's visited Beijing before), and Lauren Reed, for her O-line handling, was selected onto the Mythical Seven team.

The top three plays of the weekend (as selected at a team party on June 18 (this part is backdated)):

2. Alex's layout on Saturday vs. Team Philippines ... the first point, he decided he'd layout about chest high for a score.

1. Christian's defense in the end zone vs. Korea on Sunday. Big Brother was down 6-5 (and before that, down 6-4) when Christian pulled it, then sprinted 80 yards to D the first throw. Tao proceeded to throw a break score to Micah after a timeout to tie the game as part of a 9-1 run for Beijing, which eventually won 13-7.

Brother's three captains deserve praise: Jim Kirchhoff, one of the team's founders; Gareth Marshall, in his second year leading BB; and Mike Shyu, whose diplomacy, line-calling and stat-keeping were first-rate.

Big Brother, which has a history of dominating Shanghai parties, went into this year's extravaganza, themed "Once Upon a Time," determined to not just "win," but win so convincingly that IF the party award went to any other team, the entire idea of a "tournament party" would be exposed as a farce.

Big props to Kevin Reitz for this idea: to rebrand the party as Big Brother's prom (themed "Once Upon a Time Ultimate Prom"), effectively Shanghaiing the event (pardon the expression). He printed up banners and we prepared a dance, a musical playlist, spiked punch and a king/queen ballot box.

Highlights:

Alas, Shanghai decided a team could not win both the tournament and the party. But Zahlen put it best (paraphrasing): "There's a difference between 'winning' a party and 'owning.' They haven't invented an award for owning, yet."

But they should. It would be called the Big Brother Party Award.

With China Nationals in our rear-view mirror, the Ultimate players of Beijing now set their sets on Shanghai Open on June 11-12, the most important tournament in the club season. As we try to stay uninjured, this blog will be taking a two-week break. Honestly, there won't be much going on between now and Shanghai, as most of us will be in the midst of self-imposed drinking bans (or at least scale-backs), and our focus will be squarely on the upcoming tournament.

Hey y'all,

I have not talked to the TDs about sending this email but wanted to make a personal appeal from afar.

As most of you know, China Nationals is a wonderful tournament that helps BB get ready for Shanghai. But at the same time, it represents the largest gathering of ultimate folks in China. This includes many students and Chinese professionals that are visiting their first tournament. It also represents the only tournament that many of them can attend.

As Tao already said the budget is very tight. After the sponsorships that make it possible for many of these students to attend are factored into the budget, the situation starts to affect Tao and Alicia's sleep.

If any of you can give donations to the tournament, in any amount, I know that they would be not only be greatly appreciated, but they would also give a chance for another Chinese student to have help with tourney fees, or transportation, or lodging.

Together, i hope we can all continue to show the Chinese Ultimate community how we roll and how we support this great group of folks.

Joe, Baby Girl, Kevin, Alicia, Lauren and I went to Tianjin this morning -- very early -- to attend Edward Wang's wedding. Kevin Reitz has a very full recap of the day here, in which he comments on my awesome suits, with some really nice pictures.

We went expecting a traditional Chinese wedding but instead got a bilingual American wedding. So it goes sometimes.

A bunch of people went to the Strawberry and Midi Music Festivals after practice. The weather was not good, so your correspondent decided not to go. Also, music festivals here suck.

WEEK IN REVIEW: The Kevin Show

Below are pictures of Kevin Reitz dominating the Saturday night party at Jeju last weekend. After much hemming and hawing, he bleached his mustache white, rocked a pair of shades, a red do-rag and yellow cut-off shirt and the transformation was total. He even spoke with Hogan's deep, slightly gravelly voice: "Whatcha gonna do... whatcha gonna do, BROTHER, when Hulkamania runs wild on you!" For one night, all the way down to the slightly tumid midsection, Kevin WAS the Hulkster. Party award? For all intents and purposes, there WAS NO PARTY AWARD because it didn't go to Kevin.

Hi all,

Back in Boulder, i had a good friend who invented FlashFlight, the LED-lit frisbee. Being one of the original test group for figuring out how night ultimate would work, i have in my possession a complete set of gear. I hosted night games in boulder regularly, and am delighted to welcome everyone to BUC's first ever night ultimate pick-up.

WHAT: NIGHT ULTIMATE!!
WHERE: Zhi Chun Lu, same fields as wednesday pick up.
WHEN: May 2nd, 8-10pm.
WHO: Everyone is invited, but there's only enough equipment for 7 on 7 at one time. If you happen to have another disc, please bring it!
HOW MUCH: 20 RMB

WHAT TO WEAR: Everyone must wear white, whiter the better. If you have a white long sleeve shirt and white jogging pants, wear it. This helps with your peripheral vision on the field. I have enough red and green LED headbands for 7 on 7, so you'll be able to tell where your teammates are, but the white clothes helps "see" where the open space is. I suggest everyone wear running shoes, instead of cleats. Getting stepped on is more likely when you can't see everyone around you.

HOW DOES IT WORK: Alicia already sent this link with our time-tested variations on how to play ultimate at night:

- We'll play 7 on 7 (if possible) and we'll play normal scoring rules.
No "make-it-take-it".
- We got really lucky with the fields, as soccer people cancelled on May 2nd. So, we'll make one big field going the long way, so the endzones don't reach the slippery pavement.
- Endzones will be clearly marked as well, leave that to me.
- Defense should agree to generally take a step off and let the offense flow. Think Defense plays at 80%, Offense plays at 90%. This is to hopefully eliminate injuries and the dangers of hospital passes. Our goal is to have fun and try something new. Hopefully the lack of cleats will force everyone to play just a little slower as well.
- Teams will be constantly changing, because there are only enough LED headbands for the players on the field. At the end of a point, new players will take a headband from whoever needs a sub and join that team.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Nanjing champions ... Alicia selected Mythical Seven at Jeju

Big Brother won the first-ever Nanjing Open over the weekend, and across the way on the island of Jeju, Alicia was selected to the Mythical Seven team for her dominating performance at the Jeju Dirty Dozens Tournament.

Tao (that's me... yeah) performed admirably (if I may say), accounting for 5 of the team's 7 points in an 8-7 opening-game loss to 1-seed Gold Star (3 assists, 2 goals) and 6 of the team's 7 points in the quarterfinals on Sunday. That performance, however, was marred by a point block on universe point -- by Zahlen -- which resulted in the game-winning point for Kim Jong-Illin'.

Kevin Reitz most definitely won the party, pictures of which are so good that we're going to show you on Friday. Yes, you will have to wait for it. (Or read about it here.) He also tried to win the party by schmoozing with everyone and doing a couple beer bongs and assisting on several others. He and Tao also staged a wrestling match. Yeah. How Kevin didn't win "best mustache" is beyond everyone's ken. It is ludicrous and outrageous. There should be several people feeling very ashamed this very moment. UPDATE: Here.

Rob Hogg and Jenn Brown played on the B-Pool-winning team at Jeju. Jenn Brown also won that pool's female MVP.

And Zahlen, he of Five Ultimate and a Beijing Ultimate alum, was also selected onto the Mythical Seven team.

Oh, and of course ... YJ Tan of Beijing was on the runner-up team, Whisby Nation...

WEEK IN REVIEW: Jeju and Nanjin tournament previews; also: Discrafts for sale

Big Brother is splitting up, sort of, this weekend, as Kevin, Tao, Joel Brand and Alicia head to Jeju to play with Hong Kong as part of SARS (Special Administrative Region Squad, or something), and a bunch of other people, led by Mike Shyu, go to Nanjing to battle southerns in Big Brother's honor.

We'll have a wrap-up for you soon after the respective tournaments.

Saturday: practice, then Sanlitun, then Miga's. We discovered an incomplete terrace and chilled for a bit before going onto the real terrace. That night Miga's won my nomination for the Beijinger Bar Awards for "Best New Bar."

Oh, then this happened while we were at Sanlitun Bar Street getting some food:

On one side, coming from the north, a cab. Coming the other way, a young guy in a Mercedes. Four meters between them. I began gesticulating and saying, Hmmmm, wonder what's going to happen here.

Maggie sat on the Mercedes' hood. Joe pushed the on the car door. The guy popped out, very upset.

This exchange happened:

Joe: Can I take a picture with your car?
Chinese driver: Do you want to die?
Joe: I want to take a picture with your car.
Chinese driver: Do you want to die?

Kevin and I, with Maggie and Alicia, mobilized. Kevin then went over and told the guy he was going the wrong way (though who knows about these things ... pretty damn stupid driving down SLT Bar Street on a Saturday night either way).

Eventually, someone from the street got in the car and three-point turned next to Salud and went away. Yup the fu'erdai bitch couldn't back up his own car. Face, my friend, is a delicate thing, you pansy.

Maggie Rauch proceeded to laugh very hard at him.

As the cab passed us, the driver thanked us. Weekend's good deed done.

The next day going to Chef Too, Kevin speculated the guy may have been in the mafia and was asking Joe if he'd like the favor of being killed. Ha!

WEEK IN REVIEW: The most incredible game of roto caps ever

Monday was Qingming (Tomb-sweeping) Festival, which meant we all had the day off and spent it at Chaoyang Park playing some beer frizz before getting Sultan for dinner and going to Kevin's new apartment for roto caps. Then this happened:

We were down to our last game of roto for the night, and it was Jim and Andy (7 individual wins) vs. Sam and myself (6 individual wins). The cross-game featured Kevin and Alicia and a couple others, but for the purposes of this story, they don't matter.

Andy and Jim go up 1-0, and Jim counters one of my shots. Fair enough. They go up 2-1 when I counter one of Andy's shots, only to have Jim double-rebut me. Fair enough.

We tie it at 2, and that's when things get silly. I proceed to hit THREE CAPS with the game tied at 2. Jim counters ALL THREE SHOTS. After the fifth rebuttal of the game -- TO THREE POINTS, mind you -- everyone goes nuts. The other game practically stops to watch. Jim can't stop laughing. I'm incredulous. Moments later, Andy hits, and my rebuttal goes off the rim.

(For the record, Kevin and Alicia were up 2-1 over Angela and Nina that game when it ended. Somehow they made 3, during which span we made 16.)

Oh, and that win gave Andy the overall night win over me, 8 points to 6.

I've been thinking a bit about Rebecca Black in all the wrong sexual ways recently and I've come to the conclusion that she raises a very pertinent eschatological question: what happens if Saturday does not come after Friday, and yesterday was not Thursday when today is Friday? What if these "days" are all arbitrary tags masterminded by the Great Blogger Above to keep us from realizing our free will to "make up [our] mind[s] / [over] which seat [we can] take"? Would Rebecca Black's eyes then be sunken coals wherein demons of the planet Anareta lurk as antipodes to all our earthly creation?

I am reminded of the poem by Linda Pastan, "In a Northern Country," in which "yesterday in a northern country / my last aunt died," and "the litany / of months, September ... October ..." drags on, tiring the writer to "the way the seasons / keep changing." I can't help thinking that Rebecca Black too is tired of the way our days merge into the next day, Friday to Saturday, and before Friday, Thursday; how nights become a sort of purgatory where our sun -- which is not really the sun, you understand, but a symbol of individual ego in a universe hurtling toward destruction -- may decide, one day, "to hell with it, I'll stay here." Would we then thumb our desktop calendars to the next page? What is "next day"? What is anything.

We were so stuffed and satisfied afterwards -- especially with the McDonald's ice cream -- no one wanted to dilute our stomachs with beer. Ahh...

Our odds: Worryingly, Jim is under the impression that his weekly "banter" as compere of a local quiz ranks as entertainment. For that alone, we're worried whether he might have a touch of Charlie Sheen Syndrome and start talking about "earthworms entering his immortal octagon" or some such. That said, we quite like Charlie Sheen - but we still feel the need to punish Jim for his unfailingly US-centric quizzing. 14-3

After the quiz we hit up Great Leap Brewery, met up with Zach at Stumble Inn and played pool at Cheers.

The 5th annual China Nationals tournament will be in Beijing on May 21-22, and here's your chance to contribute in a big way.
We have secured a deal with Discraft, but we need to send in a disc design before the end of the month, so here's what I'm hoping this community can provide:
An IDEA for a disc design by Saturday, March 19. I have an idea that may or may not work, so if you're an arts/design person, let me know and we will form a crack team of disc designers and get together some day and hammer something out.
A final GRAPHIC by Monday, March 28. Again, see above note: I'm willing to make a design team and whip up a design on some day.
You will be rewarded with a Discraft disc, credit for the design in tourney packet, and ... I'll think of something else.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT REQUEST: Will anyone be in the U.S. around mid-May and COMING BACK TO BEIJING at that time? Because we would ask if you can bring back a bag of discs for us via carry-on. You will be compensated. Please let me know.

RETROSPECTIVE: Alternate universe, Pt. 2

Two winters ago, the Beijing Ultimate Committee decided to take pickup to a gym in Dongdan, or someplace. No one can remember the location. No one, in fact, can remember it happened. This night in our collective lives would be as if it had never happened, or lived by our selves in an alternate universe, had it not been for the following grainy pictures, taken by a person unknown. Alicia Lui adds: "They had the equipment on the sides so we had to be careful not to run into them. AND the floor was super slippery. I think all of us fell down at one point or another."

3) The Boracay Open is set for this April 1st to April 3rd! There will be an Open tourney on the 1st, and a Mixed tournament the 2nd and 3rd. More details to follow; for now just save the date!
4) 12th Annual Bali Nusantara Cup is planned for next April 22/23, 2011. They say they have sweet grass fields and you know the beaches are awesome… Check the website (www.ultimateindonesia.com) for details and email elodiesel...@hotmail.com with any comments or requests.
5) Jeju Dirty Dozens 2011 will be held on the island April 23/24.
6) Malaysia Open 2011 will be held on May 21, 22 in Kuala Lumpur.
