WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Congratulations to Alicia, winner of Guangzhou Jumble Jumble

Beijing's Alicia Lui single-handedly led her "jumble" team to victory at the third Guangzhou Jumble Jumble Tournament. She is pictured on the far right, doing something with her hands.

Peach (aka Eileen), who has now lost in three straight finals in China Ultimate, including with Big Brother in Hong Kong, won finals MVP (in a losing effort, of course).

A jumble tournament is one in which several "mini-teams" play one another with other mini-teams. That doesn't make sense. There are eight "mini-teams," and each of the eight takes turns pairing up with other "mini-teams" to take on "teams." You get the idea? If not, it's your own damn fault. It's so delightfully complicated that we just may do such a thing here in Beijing in the spring.

The weekend also saw the return of Julia, for 24 hours only, give or take. A gang (Kevin, Ace, Cdice, Joe, Nestor...) partied it up with her on Saturday night at Yugongyishan in an 80s-themed event. Apparently it was a really decent time.

Contacted for comment, Kevin Reitz said, "It was pretty fun, I just wanted to hang out with Julia really."

WEEK IN REVIEW: Guess who's back!

The more things change, the more they stay the same. It's getting very cold in Beijing, but we're still playing disc (indoors, BCIS -- see side panel). The yuan is appreciating, yet the currency of love and shame remains, and we spend accordingly. New people come, and new bars open, yet Beijing Ultimate continues its reign as the best community in the city. And potsticker demand in the northwestern part of the United States, from what I hear, increases every day, but Julia Filip is here, in our city, celebrating with friends she made way, way back, during times we may have forgotten. Life is pretty great, isn't it?

Jehan, 12/7:

Hey Potential Santas,

This Saturday afternoon there will be a pub crawl around beijing while dressed up as Santa Claus. It's called Santacon, it's been going on in the states for over 15 years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SantaCon) and for the last few years here in Beijing.

Any info you may need (including where to get costumes) can be found at www.bjsantacon.com. The start time and location will be announced Friday night on the website, if you plan on coming later you can call me to catch us en-route.

-Jehan

I, personally, have little interest in dressing up as a potbellied child molester, but to each his own, I guess.

Come back Wednesday for a special text retrospective.

RETROSPECTIVE: Preview to a pink party, part deux

We looked back on the 2008 pink party here, but Mike Shyu and Donald felt so bad about being left out that we're gonna make it up to them:

Lauren's going-away party this Saturday will be 2009's pink party. Last year it was to honor Reid and Julia, and this time it will be for someone who's been in Beijing even longer. It's gonna be a bittersweet night.

Readers of yesterday's post may be asking themselves, What is a pink party? This is a pink party (from Reid and Julia's goodbye outing last winter):
