WEEK IN REVIEW: Chugging along into spring and summer

As we ready ourselves for a three-day weekend, we look back, per usual, on the week that was.

(A reminder that Jeju Gnarly Nines is this weekend, which not one in Beijing will attend.)

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Beijing dominates Shenzhen

Beijingers, near-past and current, in Shenzhen for the hat tournament:

Tao: captained team to victory

Alicia: female MVP

Bill: male MVP

Doc: team in finals

Lincoln: had a good time

Tao's team lost three times in the round-robin games by a combined four points (while beating Doc's team 7-3 and Lincoln's team 11-3). Then they beat Amos's team, previously unbeaten, 8-6 in the semis, and won the finals 7-5 vs. Doc's team, which went 0-5 in round robin. (Scores might be slightly off, but it was a two-point victory in both semis and finals.)

WEEK IN REVIEW: An epic week of partying yields no casualties, in a manner of speaking

A little dumber and worse for wear, but everything should be returning to normal over the weekend. Whew.

A recap of this past week:

Saturday: New Year's Eve! Winning drink: baijiu (thank you to me, with a nod to Matt).

Sunday: Party at Ellen's (Mardi Gras theme) where inappropriate things that will never be spoken of again went down. Winning drink: jungle juice (thanks Gareth).

Monday: Party at Jim's (James Bond theme), where people drank the host's water-deprived gin. Winning drink: martini (thanks Jim).

Tuesday: Party at Baby Girl's, Tao's, Alicia's and Candice's, de facto Ben's and Chaitkin's (College Games + Southern + Big Lebowski theme). Winning drink: White Russian (thanks Jeff), just barely edging out Yanjing/Tsingtao beer. Lots of caps played. The party moved to Candice's friend's place, which was mansion-like, and it got really, really weird. Gareth puked while dominating flip-cup. Sandy got piss drunk. Ellen got piss drunk. Jeff got piss drunk. Baby Girl, uh... moving on... Baby Girl's friends got piss drunk. Candice got piss drunk. Ben got so drunk he passed out on a bed and something or other. Shan was probably piss drunk, though I can't be certain. Jim wasn't very drunk, though he was dancing a lot as if he were. Betsy was so drunk she fellated a cactus arm (no, I'm just kidding... she did grind up against Matt Mueller though.) Chaitkin was okay too. But if the piss drunks were to sit on one side of a seesaw and the not-quite-piss-drunks sat on the other, the not-quite-piss-drunkards would get launched catapult-like into the piss-drunkards and a fight would ensue with broken glass bottles -- speaking of, Joe wasn't at Candice's! GAR! -- and there would have been casualties. Uh-huh.

Alicia, Matt and I wound down our night at The Den watching Manchester United beat AC Milan 3-2 in a thrilling game.

WEEK IN REVIEW, part 2: The pictures

Lincoln has left for UBC to finish school before scurrying back to Beijing, but we had a goodbye dinner for him anyway on Wednesday at Guijie, that famous stretch of restaurants next to Dongzhimen Inner St. Here's what happened. (For more, see part 1).

Tao's life work:

Thanks Betsy for the shout-out in your last post. The full version of the long-awaited Beijing Ultimate 2008 in Review slideshow can indeed
be seen here, http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=633809648245&ref=mf , but the upload wasn't without its problems, and let's just say I can't stand seeing five months of work get ruined by a couple glitches.

Therefore, I recommend:

Betsy takes the honors, 8/28:

huckleberries,

this is a sad time for betsy. she appreciates all your heartfelt and sincere thoughts in this trying, trying time. besty realizes you all look up to her and see her as your inspiration, as your leader, as your nurturing, yet firm, guide through this journey as you shed your fledgling self and spread your glorious wings amid Her bright, warm, inviting light. yeah, she gets all that. the presents you’ve lavished upon her made it abundantly clear, as did the bundles of cash.

but unless you can make lincoln return, none of you are safe from her grief-induced wrath.

WEEKLY ITEM #1: The Weekly Schedule

Every Tuesday, Pick Up, 8-10, Deshengmen

Every Sunday, Pick Up, 3-6, Happy Valley

_________

WEEKLY ITEM #2: Upcoming Tournaments

Sept 19-20: Dalian Tournament in Dalian, China.
Oct 25-26: Hong Kong in Hong Kong, China.
Oct 31-Nov 1: Boracay Beach Tournament in Boracay, Philippines.
Nov 5: Worlds Qualifier in Manila
Nov 6-8: Manila Spirits in Manila, Philippines.

if you are planning to go to any of these tournaments and haven’t alerted the likely captains, do so now. teams are forming up quickly.

lincoln may be at manila so in betsy’s mind, there is only one tournament left this year. it will be tropical and it will be raining dolla bills and betsy hopes to get supermanned in boracay.

_________

now is the time in the weekly email when betsy gives her weekly shout outs and call outs. remember, you want to get shouted out, but you don't want to get called out.

a shout out to jim and jehan. betsy loves when little men cram themselves into tight, dirty spaces.

a call out to tao and margaret. it is rumored that all the summer league captains made a wager before the summer league party: if a member of your team is the first to boot, you must turf the first disc on sunday. both tao and margaret booted, failed to follow the terms of the wager, and were smacked down by karma thusly to a finish even lower than 4th place: Called Out 4th Place.

a shout out to kevin. you are a rock diety, like pegasus or mc hammer. you make betsy want to shoop.

a call out to the wu crew. move closer to dong zhi men. it will be easier on all of us. especially on those of us that want you closer to dong zhi men.

a shout out to joe. partial nudity at beijing ultimate gatherings has risen 21% since your return. keep up the good work.

a house-keeping call out to CUUP. ugh. betsy’s brain throws up a little when she thinks about you people. at least you were able to take shanghai down with you.

a shout out to body shots. betsy declares all future body shots must be done off hairless people. she spent half the night hacking up jims nipple hairs. *shudder*

a call out to alchemy. you turned lead into poop. you should have stayed home and got philosopher stoned instead.

a shout out to hello sexy. hello sexy.

a call out to alfred, the monkey butler. wow. all of beijing joins betsy as we collectively shake our heads in your general direction.

a shout out to catcher in the sky. sure, you could have made it easy on yourself and guaranteed victory by choosing the betsy-original “a markbreaking huck of staggering genius” as your team name, but betsy gives respect to you for persevering under such harsh team name conditions. unclever people need the most reassurance.

_________

WEEKLY RUMOR THAT MUST BE TRUE:
after the beijing ultimate summer league dinner and tequila shots at sandy's cousin's bar, apparently the redbucks played a thrilling show at gingkos, two blazing sets of bluegrass with stunning performances from beijing ultimate residents chris, amy, and chip. later they let the one drop with some tight reggae to round out the night. it was quite possibly the most electrifying concert to hit beijing since avril lavigne last tour. no member of beijing ultimate who was in the crowd remembers any of it, though a few of them remember booting later.

_________

WEEKLY ITEM #3: Lunch Time Poll
betsy learned this week that doc is trying out a new nickname. she likes “pg” but thinks it needs to carry a deeper, more descriptive meaning than Picasso girl. which of the following meanings is most appropriate:

a) post-modern gaylord

b) pansy growth

c) putrid gas

d) petite groin

cast your votes!

and finally, your moment of zen…

catch you on the field,
betsy

Yet another farewell upcoming

Lincoln Cheung, pictured below, writing on Google Groups:

Im leaving this thursday afternoon!

So, lets eat hotpot and get drunk so I get to spend the majority of the flight sitting on the bathroom.

Lets say Wednesday at 8 o clock - hotpot on guijie - i forget the name of the restaurant, but its the one that is about 2 restaurants away from beixinqiao subway station, on the north side of the road.

As i am aware that might not be the easiest to find, you can give me a call at 152 0129 8129.

if you could throw me an email on whether or not you're coming i will make reservations. thanks !

POSTSCRIPT: Kevin Reitz in reply:

After that, let the party roll into Mao Livehouse on Gulou Dong Dajie. My band, Lan Daotian, is playing some funky grooves and jams at about 10pm. It's probably a 20RMB cover or some crap.

Many of you came to my inaugural gig with these guys at the Hot Cat Club... see these videos.

Here's your chance to check us out after we've actually practiced together!

WEEKEND ROUNDUP, part 1: Nerdiness

Sometimes Beijing Ultimate enjoys going to the mall on Friday night and playing Settlers of Catan for three hours, or playing Jenga inside a noisy bar.

No, seriously.

About Catan: Kevin was going to win on his turn unless Lincoln, who goes before him, could get Aaron -- his childhood friend and (probably) long lost (twin) brother -- to trade him a few woods and bricks so that he could win. We decided it'd only be fair if Lincoln and Kevin had a chug-off to determine the winner.

Here's how it went down:

Between the Catan game and the Jenga, drummer extraordinaire Kevin Reitz showed off his new band, Lan Daotian, at a cozy bar called the Hot Cat Club, tucked away in a hutong near Beixingqiao and the Lama Temple. This is them playing on Saturday, along with pictures of his fan club and the lovely Alicia:

Well done, good sir. If you're unfamiliar, this isn't the first time Kevin's played for the crowds.

We'll have a video up in the second part of Weekend Roundup. (Update: here)

POSTSCRIPT: Jenga -- minutes of entertainment!
