WEEK IN REVIEW: Faces of summer league

God we're all still hung over. Wait, what day is it? Not Sunday? Okay, nevermind. I'm okay. Alex is okay. Ginny is (maybe) okay. We're all okay.

PICTURES OF THE WEEK:

Can you guess which of the following people is hung over? (From summer league finals on Saturday.)

A year ago, if I told you Matt Mueller would not be one of the answers to the above question, would you believe me?

And what if I told you Ivan, making a special Beijing appearance, would be, having nearly died the day before drinking baijiu with Alex and Ginny?

Change is a strange beast.

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

Tao, 8/19: Subj: Fantasy football:

Who's in?

Gonna start a standard-setting yahoo league with a live online draft, for fun. Let me know ...

p.s. Only join if you enjoy fantasy sports and don't mind losing to me.

WEEK IN REVIEW: On this, the eve of BUSL 2011 finals...

Andrew Moffat, better known as Baby Girl, dares speak with this video. Watch it.

PICTURES OF THE WEEK:

From Week 5 ... yes, that's Shan Wu making a guest appearance!

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

Tao, 8/8:

This is actually pretty good: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjkyNDIzMzI0.html

The last clip is from Shanghai Open though: me to Alex.

Everything else: I think Baby Girl is trying to say Fuzz Bullets are going to crush Fei Pan Da to make it to the finals of Beijing Ultimate Summer League 2011.

The return of Betsy

Because nothing that Betsy does escapes this blog:

July 2:

all who mourned the passing of betsy,

rejoice. she has not forgotten her multitude of adoring worshipers. she is always watching you. she was watching when you owned tianjin. she was watching the all big brother finals at china nationals. and yes, she was watching when you destroyed everything there was to destroy at shanghai. like all great masters, betsy too knows when to release her people, so they can spread their wings and grow, unencumbered.

but now. she’s back. and she's already seen ginny’s penis. she threw up a little.

WEEKLY ITEM #1: The Weekly Schedule

Every Wednesday, Pick Up, 8-10, Zhi Chun Lu

Saturday July 2, Summer League Hat Tournament, Beijing Chaoyang Sports Fitness and Leisure Park, Clinic from 12-1pm, games from 1-5pm. 50RMB. Van leaves from DZM at 11am.

happy valley fields are no more. see tao’s e-mail for a complete explanation of what sam did to the fields last saturday night, rendering no other option for the city of beijing but demolition by fire. it was legendary.

_________

WEEKLY ITEM #2: Upcoming Tournaments

Aug 25-30: Pyongyang Hat, North Korea

Sept 17-18: Singapore Ultimate Open

Oct 22-23: Hong Kong

Nov 25-27: Manila Spirits

pyongyang hat, also known as “the tao, alicia, and kevin elope hat”, will be your best chance to do something worthwhile with your life. think about it.

_________

now is the time in the weekly email when betsy gives her weekly shout outs and call outs. remember, you want to get shouted out, but you don't want to get called out.

a shout out to ginny. not since joe and jeff’s drunken “adventures” has a penis been exposed for so long in full view of fellow big brother players. not even jim or tao qualify, as nina and alicia can confirm.

a call out to sam. some dating tips from betsy: start hitting on girls your own age, don’t bother them while they are working, and if they are brandishing a weapon, it’s best to move on. she just wasn’t that into you.

a shout out to chad. keep this up and maybe big brother will let canada host the 4th of july sometime.

a call out to christian. betsy still can't believe you didn't catch that. you will remain called out until you invent a time machine, go back, and teach yourself to catch your d's.

a shout out to tao. as the second best writer in the group, betsy would like to commend you on your short story, in which you portray our best writer, besty, doing awesome stuff with fire.

a call out to peach. if anyone is going to send sexy, sexy e-mails to junior high kids, it is going to be mike shyu. you’ve been warned. keep it clean, or keep it on the da ge fei pan list.

a shout out to loveseat. loveseat’s inaugural performance proved, once and for all, that everything is better without jeff. except betsy’s bed. after lincoln got crabs, she’s been lonely.

a call out to crabs. besty’s not done with you. she has a flamethrower and knows how to use it.

a shout out to big brother. great job at shangahi. betsy is honored to be called the most important thing that has and will ever happen to beijing, as well as an inspiration to all and the pinnacle of excellence. she knows you couldn’t have done it without her, and humbly acceptance responsibility for everything good in the world.

_________

WEEKLY ITEM #3: Betsy's Corner

since betsy doesn't have enough of a platform to share her views and opinions on how awesome she is, betsy’s corner is a place for her to give everyone another piece of her mind. this week, betsy unlocks the truths and secrets of big brother through the infallible tool of anagramination. next week: possibly more!

William Perry – Warm Ripe Lily

has ginny every told you the story of how he lost his virginity in a flower shop? spoiler, it wasn’t with a girl.

Michael Doc Tobin – Condom Beat Chili

has michael tobin ever tell you about the time he tried to invent a new version of rock/paper/scissors? condom beat chili, chili beat ass, and ass beat condom. he knows this all from experience.

Barbara O’Connell – Barnacle Bra Loon

has Barbara ever told you about the time she worked as a waitress in a pirate-themed seafood joint, and a bird flew by and snatched her bra? betsy thinks you probably just had to be there.

Peach Eileen Regan – Enrage Penile Ache

had any of you prude little sissies actually attended peaches naked party, you would already know this story. betsy was there, of course, and let’s just say the aching will continue for quite some time.

Chad Hensler – Hardens Lech

has chad ever told you about the time he worked briefly as on a porn set, as a fluffer for a norwegian dude named lech?

Ingrid Akerlind – Drained Girl Ink

has Ingrid ever told you about the time she drained girl ink? it pays surprisingly well.

Alex Ornik - Relax Oink

alex fucks pigs sometimes.

_________

WEEKLY RUMOR THAT MUST BE TRUE:

a group of merrymakers descended on great leap friday night, where drunk joe made a rare appearance. goaded by ginny, db, dray, and tory, joe was sent into a tailspin of narcoleptic, mindmelting bizarrity when gareth handed him a traffic cone. betsy knows never to give drunk joe any props, let alone a traffic cone. nunchucks? sure. fire extinguisher? why not. but gareth apparently did not get the memo. what transpired could push linguistics to the very meniscus of explanation, but suffice it to say this traffic cone witnessed and felt things no cone should ever have to. by the end of the night, it was reduced to a traffic quivering-at-the-nightmarish-insanity-perpetrated-on-itself cone.

Weekly Rumor Disclaimer: The Weekly Rumor is absolutely and one hundred percent true. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead is purely coincidental.

_________

and finally, your moment of zen…

http://i.imgur.com/ZAnMK.gif

yes tao, besty was watching that too.

catch you on the field,
betsy
xxxooo

Tao's reply, 7/3:

Betsy! You ... changed your font, you scrofulous fuckslut.

WEEK IN REVIEW: Hat tournament on Potlatch weekend

Potlatch is happening this weekend, where Beijing Ultimate's Kevin Reitz and HHH will be tearing it up, I'm sure. Former Beijing Ultimate players Reid and Julia, who are based in Portland, will compete, as will, I'm sure, Zahlen and the other Titcombs. Look for satellite coverage of that event in the coming days.

Meanwhile, in town: hat tourney! Tomorrow!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK:
From June 28's Flash Fried Finale at Punk in Opposite House. The picture above was taken by Global Times, and that's Tao in there looking disappointed.

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

A reminder to everyone that the hat tournament (1 pm) and beginners/ intermediate clinic (noon) is this Saturday, but from a DIFFERENT LOCATION. Our Happy Valley fields, we were informed earlier this week, are being chai'ed / demolished.

The best way of getting to these new fields is taking a van / car-pooling with us from Dongzhimen. Meet in front of the McDonald's at Ginza Mall (Subway Line 2, Dongzhimen stop, Exit C). For those attending the clinic, the van leaves at 11 am. Another van will leave at noon for the hat tournament. It will cost 15 rmb each way to take the van.

REMEMBER TO BRING:
-- One white and one non-white shirt
-- Water
-- Money (50 rmb for hat, or your summer league registration fee if
you have it)

NEW FIELD ADDRESS:
Beijing Chaoyang Sports Fitness and Leisure Park
No. 77 Yaojiayuan Road, Chaoyang District

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Shanghai 2011 champions: Big Brother!

Big Brother ended a seven-year winless drought at international tournaments by winning Shanghai Open 2011, trailing only once all weekend (in the semifinals vs. Korea). The team from Beijing beat Team Philippines 15-10 in the finals, with its O-line committing only three turnovers all game (no breaks). Tao was selected finals MVP along with TP's Pia Ybanez (who has a tag on this blog because she's visited Beijing before), and Lauren Reed, for her O-line handling, was selected onto the Mythical Seven team.

The top three plays of the weekend (as selected at a team party on June 18 (this part is backdated)):

3. Kevin at the party (see below)

2. Alex's layout on Saturday vs. Team Philippines ... the first point, he decided he'd layout about chest high for a score.

1. Christian's defense in the end zone vs. Korea on Sunday. Big Brother was down 6-5 (and before that, down 6-4) when Christian pulled it, then sprinted 80 yards to D the first throw. Tao proceeded to throw a break score to Micah after a timeout to tie the game as part of a 9-1 run for Beijing, which eventually won 13-7.

Brother's three captains deserve praise: Jim Kirchhoff, one of the team's founders; Gareth Marshall, in his second year leading BB; and Mike Shyu, whose diplomacy, line-calling and stat-keeping were first-rate.

There are four Facebook albums currently up with pictures: Sunday, pt. 1; Sunday, pt. 2; Party pt. 1 (Big Brother Presents: Once Upon a Time Prom); Party pt. 2 (Big Brother Prom Photobooth).

More pictures to come in the coming weeks.

vs. Korea:

vs. Team Philippines in the finals:

One of Tao's four assists in the game to go with three goals.

Big Brother, which has a history of dominating Shanghai parties, went into this year's extravaganza, themed "Once Upon a Time," determined to not just "win," but win so convincingly that IF the party award went to any other team, the entire idea of a "tournament party" would be exposed as a farce.

Big props to Kevin Reitz for this idea: to rebrand the party as Big Brother's prom (themed "Once Upon a Time Ultimate Prom"), effectively Shanghaiing the event (pardon the expression). He printed up banners and we prepared a dance, a musical playlist, spiked punch and a king/queen ballot box.

Highlights:

Alas, Shanghai decided a team could not win both the tournament and the party. But Zahlen put it best (paraphrasing): "There's a difference between 'winning' a party and 'owning.' They haven't invented an award for owning, yet."

But they should. It would be called the Big Brother Party Award.

Here's Kevin on Sunday morning:

Tao to Big Brother listserv, 5/18:

Just to reiterate what Gareth mentioned at practice on Saturday: as hosts, we have the responsibility to be as warm, welcoming and supportive of our fellow Frisbee friends as possible. We'll be so humble that our humility will be as a boast. Please do what you can to make everyone -- especially those vassals from Hong Kong -- understand that Beijing is the greatest city in the world and we its greatest denizens.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Edward Wang's Tianjin wedding

Joe, Baby Girl, Kevin, Alicia, Lauren and I went to Tianjin this morning -- very early -- to attend Edward Wang's wedding. Kevin Reitz has a very full recap of the day here, in which he comments on my awesome suits, with some really nice pictures.

We went expecting a traditional Chinese wedding but instead got a bilingual American wedding. So it goes sometimes.

Below is a PICTURE BLOG, or whatever it is the kids call em these days.

Dashing people (clockwise from top left: Richie, Alicia, Baby Girl, Joe, Lauren, Kevin):

I hate weddings because of shit like this. These little twerps can barely walk, and they're throwing flower petals on the ground? WHAT IF THE BRIDE TRIPS? HAS ANYONE THOUGHT OF THESE CONTINGENCIES?

Nice suit, Mr. Groom. And the bride's looking good too.

The seesaw pics are winners:

There's more...

Then we went to the train station (Tanggu, that is).

Lauren: staying awake.

Lauren: fetal position.

And there you have it.
