WEEKEND ROUNDUP, pt. 1: Saying goodbye once again

She texted us the following day with a simple message at 12:20 pm:

Bye friends! [heart symbol] Pnut

And that was it. Tina Yen -- known everywhere as Pnut (even in Chinese -- "Where's huasheng?" the bar manager asked me) -- has left us. Again.

On Friday we participated in a party in Wudaokou themed "P is for PNUT's Party!" We went to PBD Pizza and then Solutions -- a Propaganda-like bar next to Propaganda -- for drinking and dancing. The idea of the party was to have people dress as something that starts with the letter P. Sam, for example, went as Peter Pan. Pnut went as Poker Face. Lots of people decided on "player," which is so prosaic it doesn't serve a capitalized P. Baby Girl, my roommate, went as Pearl -- the tampax. And I went as Period Pad.

It was truly disgusting -- even to me. And that's saying something.

We did get a cool group shot though: Andy is "Pillage captain," i.e. Mike Shyu; Nina and Alicia are Pink, um... pink. And Chirona and her friend Chelsea are preppies.

Something tells me this picture below will eventually find its way into the wrong hands and I'm going to be made to look like a MAJOR douche. I shudder to think what people will say about Jehan:

Remember, the costume is PERIOD PAD. The two shades of blood are a nice touch, but does it beat Baby Girl, going as Pearl tampax, wearing all white except for a red hat, with a string dangling from his shorts?

It was, in the end, Pnut's party and we were all just visitors. Here is her stealing the show:

Jim as Popeye.

We're going to miss you, Pnut. We may not be seeing any of this anytime soon, but we'll sure remember it. We'll see you soon.

POSTSCRIPT:

For such a one with an
Unpretentious smile,
Could we not say, with all the colors in the
Kaleidescope of the heart,
That in this most brutish, most awful
Reality we might find
Understanding,
Communion, sweet
Karma?

WEEK IN REVIEW: Pnut's last night, BUSL finals preview

The time is nigh. Summer league finals this SATURDAY, noon to 6 pm...

Frisbeers,

The end of Beijing Ultimate Summer League (BUSL) heralds the close of summer, and what a shame if we let it simper away without the proper solstial fete.

This Saturday, August 7, starting at noon, we will play two semifinals games (Pillage vs. Bid, Huck vs. Burn... technically games start at 1 pm) followed by a third-place game and then the finals. Free-flowing beer out of kegs will arrive at 4ish, followed by chuan'rs and other consumables. We'll be done at 6ish, hang around a bit for the awards ceremony and drinking games, then leave at sundown and rise again for a full-frontal moonlit bacchanalia at Solutions in Wudaokou (see attached, courtesy of Pnut). If you haven't partied with Beijing Ultimate yet, prepare for bad things to happen to you -- and I totally mean that in the Jace Everett-of-Bad Blood way, i.e. splendid things. Person who dresses most inappropriately for all occasions gets free shots all night -- but we get to choose the shot.

(Full- and half-season registrants and captains will get priority seating on a party bus (51 seats) to the Wu.)

A van will leave Dongzhimen at 11 am -- again, meet at stairs in front of McDonald's at Ginza Mall, subway exit C -- and contact Chirona (chirona.silverstein@gmail.com) if you're interested in the Wudaokou van/carpool. Carpoolers are also meeting at Dawanglu at 11 am, subway exit B.

The price for summer league finals is 70 kuai (45 for Chinese students), which includes beer, food, transportation and two free drinks at Solutions. For games only and no food, ride and party, it's 50/30 yuan. Full- and half-season registrants don't need to pay a thing.

BUSL FINALS SURVIVAL GUIDE:
Some of us have done this a few times before and can offer some advice on how to make it through the day without passing out in the Xiaowuji Village canal. Light breakfast is recommended and, before drinking, consumption of fruits and bread and whatever is available on the field. That said, bring a Nalgene or water bottle to take full advantage of the free-flowing golden-hops brew of sumptuous delightfulness. We will not be offering cups, fuck no. And bring a change of clothes and/or deodorant if you're the kind who cares about these kind of things. So to answer your question, no, the bus won't be making shower stops... though now that I think about it, why not? The bus will stop at a public bathhouse. No, just kidding, it actually will not. Bring a change of shirt.

Questions, comments, suggestions, let me know.

p.s. Apologies if you receive this email twice, or are already out of town. For the latter group, we'll take pictures for you and put it on http://beijingultimate.blogspot.com (you people out of China may actually be able to access that blog).

p.p.s. If you're wondering where we play, you must be new to Beijing Ultimate. I reproduce for you the directions to our fields from Dawanglu (subway stop on Line 1):

Take East Fourth Ring Road going south and tell driver to get off at the Shi Ba Li Dian Qiao exit (十八里店桥), i.e. Exit No. 16. At the first bridge, i.e. Shi Ba Li Dian NORTH Qiao (or "qiao bei"), make a U-turn. You'll then want to make the 2nd right, i.e. turn into the neighborhood with a huge arch that says "Xiao Wu Ji Village Welcomes You" (小武技村欢迎你). Go down that street about 600 meters and make the first left (where there's a street). The fields will soon become visible on your left. (Map is attached.)

p.p.p.s. Final regular season standings:

Pillage: 6-0, +51
Huck: 4-2, +9
Burn: 1-5, -23
Bid: 1-5, -37

Summer league finals, all your questions answered:

Lots of questions this week about Saturday's games and party. I have answers!

Q: I heard there's a party on Friday night at Solutions to celebrate Pnut's leaving from China. Is that Friday party, like, the same as the Saturday party?
A: NO.

Q: What is the party Friday?
A: Pnut's going-away party, 9 or 10 pm or so at Solutions, which is next to Propaganda on Huaqing Jiayuan (a street name). YOU ARE WELCOME TO COME. It's a costume party, dress as "P," as in, "Plinth" or "Plebeian" or "Pistachio" (if you can come as a nut, you win).... drinks and prizes for best costume!

Q: So, this is related to Saturday's party...
A: It is NOT.

Q: What is Saturday's schedule?
A: Presented chronologically:

11 am: Bus leaves from Dongzhimen (subway line 2 Exit C) (15 rmb)
11:15 am: Car-poolers leave from Dawanglu (subway line 1 Exit B)

noon: Arrive at fields, warm up.
1 pm: Semifinals begin. Field 1: Pillage vs. Bid. Field 2: Huck vs. Burn.
3 pm: 3rd-place game begins.
4:30 pm: Championship game begins.

6:30 pm: Awards ceremony
7 pm: Load party bus for Wudaokou.

Midnight: Boot.
12:01 am: Rally.
5 am: Snack at hamburger/hot dog stand outside of Propaganda.

Q: Are we having the party at Propaganda?
A: NO. We'll be at a place called Solutions (Huaqing Jiayuan, near Wudaokou subway exit off line 13), which is so new that it doesn't have a website or City Weekend/theBeijinger directory listing. We will be getting two free drinks each.

Q: Who gets to sit on the party bus, and what happens if we don't have a seat?
A: Captains, full-season and half-season registrants get priority, in that order. BUSL will arrange a ride for everyone else.

Q: BUSL?
A: Beijing Ultimate Summer League.

Q: Should we bring anything extra or different to the finals?
A: Nalgene and/or water bottle for the beer. Also, we will be playing under the sun for a long time, so... sunscreen. It also never hurts to pack an energy bar.

On a serious note, you may consider bringing a bag of chips or fruit or whatever to ensure you aren't puking before the party bus reaches its destination.

Q: Where will we be eating?
A: We're gonna have a block party on Huaqing Jiayuan, which is just south of the Wudaokou subway stop on Line 13, and dinner will be served there. As for actual content, we're gonna leave that a mystery for now.

BUSL is supplying X amount of food, but should you order anything else, be advised that you will have to foot the bill individually.

Q: I'm a vegan. What food have you prepared for me?
A: Either the feces of pygmy marmosets or lots of delicious vegetables. We're gonna put them in two boxes and whichever box you choose is the one you're stuck with.

Q: My friend doesn't want to play but he/she wants to watch. Is that okay?
A: Yes, but if he/she will be drinking/eating/partying with us, we will be requiring he/she pay BUSL. We're a not-for-profit, so please take pity on us.

Q: What does all this cost?
A: If you've paid for half- or full-season, nothing. Otherwise:

70 rmb gets you everything. If you're a Chinese student, then you pay 50.
50 rmb gets you beer on field, food and Solutions drink tickets, no games.
30 rmb gets you food and beer on the fields but no Solutions
15 rmb gets you beer on the fields, nothing else

Q: I'm new to Beijing and would like to join a team. Is that possible?
A: Probably, but no guarantees. We'll see what teams need players. We would like to discourage -- though not strongly -- people from bringing more than one friend who wants to play. If you've come out before, we would love to have you, but it's difficult placing complete newbies onto teams on the final day of the season.

Q: What should I bring to the field?
A: Cleats (if you have them) and four shirt colors (if possible): red, pink, yellow, charcoal (or black/blue).

Q: Are jerseys available for sale?
A: Yes, in every color (but not every size) for 50 rmb each.

Q: I would like to learn more about the history of BUSL finals and BUSL in general and Beijing Ultimate and China Ultimate.
A: Here and here are two write-ups of a pretty epic 2008 BUSL finals. Here is every summer league-related post via the Beijing Ultimate blog. Here is where you can learn more about China Ultimate.

Q: Some of those sites require VPNs.
A: Proxy.org and/or Witopia/Freedur/Black VPN should have been on your computer long, long ago.

Q: Whoa, there were strippers in '08? What about this year?
A: If I told you "close enough," would you believe me?

Q: Elaborate.
A: I can't. She'll hit me.

Q: I want to hook up with this really cute guy/girl who's been on my team all season but I don't know what to say to him/her. Can you give me any advice?
A: Email me reply-only.

Knowledge is power, ladies and gents. Please use it for good.

PICTURES OF THE WEEK:

Jesse had a going-away party last Friday, which involved drinks at Second Floor and then dancing at Poachers. I neglected to post these pictures online this past Monday because Sunday's mojito night at Fubar took the spotlight, but then the following surfaced on Chirona's Facebook, and... speechless.

If you looked at the above and thought they were taken at Destination, I wouldn't believe you. This hopefully balances things out a bit:

We should mention here that Jesse, who was supposed to catch a 2 am flight to the U.S., missed his plane and wound up playing on Sunday in the final regular season game of BUSL. Heh. It only sucks when it's you missing an international flight.

Oh, and mojito night at Fubar was cool too:

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

Tao, regarding the party tonight, 8/4:

Must I remind everyone?

http://groups.google.com/group/beijing-ultimate/browse_thread/thread/...

...in which Pnut said, rather nonsensically,

Shen,

If you like it rough, I could be convinced to punch you . . . all night long if you'd like.

(Hmm, what are you punching him with all night long?)

And then added,

Dear Tao,

Up yours. For a truly lascivious night, I'm considering moving the after party to Chocolate. Perhaps, you wouldn't complain so much then, Oh, and Tao, if you're rolling in enough money, you could bring home a lovely hooker to play with your live doll.

This is the girl we're all suddenly celebrating like she's Susan B. Anthony wrapped in a Helen Keller bonnet?

Need I remind everyone this is the girl who gave our friend Ben Redden a black eye from which he might never recover? The poor chap can only cry out of one eye, and he's crying three eyes' worth of tears every night.

Need I remind everyone this is the girl who's gotten so uppity -- like all-up-in-yo-face -- to so many of her rivals that now their best defense against her sass is quiet deference and, when called upon, unquestioning subservience?

Need I further remind everyone this is the girl who danced away half the night like a concupiscent halfpence tramp at a bar known for Korean girls and the syphilis-ribbed laowai who prey on them -- Mango -- with moves so wanton they're not fit for description here or in any whorehouse this side of Bunny Ranch?

Speaking of bunnies, this is the girl who cuddles with them before molesting them in sexual manners so perverse that I shudder to wonder what haunted past drove her down this road of iniquity and sin. This is a girl whose love for furries -- the fetish -- as demonstrated in the pictures here, http://beijingultimate.blogspot.com/2009/02/player-of-week-tina-yen.html, finds equivalence only in her insatiable appetite for ACTUAL FURRY ANIMALS, as in, EATING THEM RAW. A girl with her own tag on Fleshbot. A girl who dared to drink so much tequila during her last goodbye party that she puked over a poor old lady on the plane and said, "Bitch, you clean it up!" A girl who will kick your head on the curb American History X-style and swing out her arms while backpedal-strutting and bobbing her head all like, "Wha'chu gonna do 'bout it?"

Yeah, this is your hero, isn't it, Lauren? Isn't it, Beijing Ultimate? Well, you two are made for each other. Just do us all a favor and not post any pictures.

Disgustedly,
Tao

p.s. While we're revisiting blogposts, I finally got around to finishing a May 11, 2009 post titled, "Spring league finals, pt. 1." It was a game in which one team went up 12-5 in a game to 13, only to barely win 15-14.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: More than just mojitos went down at 1-kuai mojito night at Fubar...

After the final regular season game of summer league concluded on Sunday, a bunch of people went to Fubar for its monthly 1-kuai mojito night, except this time they weren't serving mojitos -- they were serving margaritas. And it was so cold that some people who shall remain nameless, like Andy, puked on the spot due to the drink's "coldness." Later, Baby Girl stumbled home and kept saying how fucked he was, which is true -- he puked the next day, multiple times. (But way to keep it down on Sunday night, champ.)

It's good to see summer league captains representin'.

But they aren't the story. No, the real story involved a couple of people who ACTUALLY shall remain nameless. Hint though: this is the fourth consecutive post in which Jim's been tagged. (UPDATE, 8/9: Picture here.)

POSTSCRIPT: Pnut gave Ben Redden a black eye.

Ben: "I'll head-butt you."
Pnut: "If you do I'm going to punch you."
Ben: pretends to head-butt Pnut.
Pnut: socks Ben in the eye with an overhead right.

Pictures to come, I hope. I'll track down Ben and snap a photo if I have to go all paparazzi on him.

Nice to have you back, Pnut.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: The new party place

Apparently Mango Club in the Wu -- and the Wu in general -- is the new place to be and be seen. Saturday night, Jim and Pnut tore it up at Mango, and were back in the Wu -- a place called Solutions -- after Monday Big Brother practice. We on the East side of town dread the day when party central shifts to that inhospitable place known as Wudaokou, but is the tide shifting? Only time will tell.

WEEK IN REVIEW: Life as usual

Wednesday pickup at Jianwai Soho was very poorly attended, probably because it was raining. Three new players -- two complete beginners -- came though, so there's that.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK:

Renda University

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

Yin and Pnut take the honors with this exchange:

Yin:

hi guys,
a friend of mine is running an event where they need some white people to attend. its 800rmb/day so if you need a little extra cash, and youre not ugly, please respond to roel...@mmw-china.com heres some further info:

Pnut:

Dear Yin,

Perhaps you relish in the glory of being exoticized. Oh yes, being the hot Canadian Asian girl that you are, I'm sure you are aware what a true rarity you must be among New Yorkers. ( And as I recall, you do like to go for a spin around the pole at Chocolate. :P) As for me, however, I would rather gauge out my eyes than to ever be viewed as "exotic." I just simply find the idea of being "exotic" to be quite distasteful.

What I find even more distasteful, disgusting in fact, are the social and economic implications of the privilege that is continually bestowed on our white friends. It offends me that, for merely being white, a person can get paid more in three days than the average monthly salary of an engineer in China. It disgusts me, that the privileged continue to be advantaged in China, while the man peddling his wares for 1 or 2 kuai on the street corner, much less the farmer in rural China could only dream of such an opportunity - but unfortunately, they were not born white. It disgusts me more that to be modern in China, to seek upward mobility and advancement in China, requires some sort of imitation of "whiteness" or of the "West" or that being "white" is so unquestionably associated with the positives of being "foreign" and "developed" - God forbid a black man show up.

I totally agree, the world is what it is. But that's no excuse for ignorance. So yeah, if you are a good-looking, cash strapped, white person, by all means, go for it. You gotta do what you gotta right? It's just too bad, I won't ever get paid for standing around and being Asian. To each their own. As for me, I merely think that it is a shame that some things in this world are so outrageously ridiculous and that things like a person's being white can be made into a commodity and attraction.

And as for something being totally irrelevant except for the fact that it is an example of something totally absurd:

RETROSPECTIVE: Pink party 2008

Readers of yesterday's post may be asking themselves, What is a pink party? This is a pink party (from Reid and Julia's goodbye outing last winter):

Friday, July 31, 2009

WEEK IN REVIEW: A goodbye

It's often been said that Beijing is a transient community, where people come and go with the seasons. Very few stay for more than a year, and those who do leave eventually as well, as Reid and Julia last winter, and Jason Cox before that.

Still, knowing this reality and accepting it doesn't fill the void of each new departure, such as that of Tina Yen, known to all as Pnut, who recently wrapped up a nine-month stay in China and left for New York to begin a Masters program in Chinese history at Columbia University. She's the one pictured in the far right wearing the teal tank top.

On Sunday we had a BCD for her, and on Tuesday, after pickup, a small group of us ate at a chuar bar before pounding some whiskey and tequila and going to Chocolate, the Russian dance club near Ritan Park. If you don't remember, this is Chocolate -- and, incidentally, also a character sketch of Pnut (like this one), though really of the former Pnut, before she met Phil. The doormen wouldn't let us bring in any tequila so Jim, Pnut and I each took three swigs and handed them an empty bottle.

Pnut got home and proceeded to not pack -- passing out instead -- so that when her cousin knocked on the door the next morning she was groggy, drunk and/or hung over, and definitely not ready to leave. That's a Beijing farewell if ever there were one.

We'll miss you, Pnut!

Monday, July 27, 2009

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Pnut's BCD

A farewell dinner for Tina Yen at our usual place. She'll have a bigger party on Tuesday night, after which we'll have more to say about our favorite panda/bunny/horsey/rabid dog/dying kitten/anything-furry lover and all-around sweetie-when-not-wailing-on-people.

For the record, Pnut's underage* boyfriend, Phil, is very good at caps.

*
He's not actually underage. We don't think.

WEEK IN REVIEW: Summer league draft

Summer league captains met after Tuesday night pickup to draft teams in Nanluoguxiang, and it was quite the time. In the end, four good, more or less evenly strengthened teams were chosen, with everyone happy with their selections. Now we wait for the games to begin (this Sunday, in case you've lost track).

PICTURES OF THE WEEK: From the 2009 summer league draft on Tuesday at Backward Bar in Nanluoguxiang:

Jeff Orcutt, moderator

Kelly and Mike

Kevin and Alicia

Margaret and Tao

Candice and Xiaozhi

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

Betsy returns with one of her finer performances, 7/7/09:

friendly neighborhood beijingers,

betsy has been watching you all, very, very closely. and with the possible exception of joe, you all have no excuse. none. inexcusable. excuses, excuses. that’s all betsy hears. well you are not excused. it’s all i’m too fat this, or i’ve got a girlfriend now that, or i’m too busy playing with myself and my shiny new mandolin. that’s crap. get out there and play some disc people.

WEEKLY ITEM #1: The Weekly Schedule

Every Tuesday, Pick Up, 8-10, Deshengmen

Every Sunday, Beijing Ultimate Summer League, 3-6, Happy Valley

tao will be this year’s jeff. please register all complaints, loudly and frequently, directly to tao. he will deal with them swiftly and smiling. oh yes, he will, if he knows what’s good for him.

_________

now is the time in the weekly email when betsy gives her weekly shout outs and call outs. remember, you want to get shouted out, but you don't want to get called out.

a shout out to aaron, charlotte and doc. betsy thanks you for making beijing a brighter, lovelier, more enjoyable place to be. when you abandoned it for potlatch.

a call out to lightning. everybody knows you can carry an electric current of 300 kiloamperes and release 5 gigajoules of energy (giggity) at your slightest whim, but must you do it between 3 and 6 pm on sundays near happy valley from june to september? we like to play frisbee at those times. thanks.

a shout out to aide. who’s a good girl? who’s a good puppy? you are. you are a cute little puppy wuppy. yes you are. yes you are just the cutest widdle ugh betsy’s going to vomit.

a call out to bunny. you better start acting cute and fast. there’s a new adorable animal in town and who’s in danger of being turned into rabbit stew? you are. yes you are just the most delicious of the frisbee-related pets when enjoyed with carrots, potatoes and some paprika.

a shout out tao. as previously noted, tao’s the new jeff, but not in the semi-permanent-shout-out-status-thanks-for-everything-you-do way. more like, we’re watching your every more, waiting for the slightest misstep upon which we can pounce like so many lonely bachelors upon his mom. please don’t disappoint.

a call out to jeff. you thought you could just slide by? no ma’am, your free ride is over. why don’t you go arrange an awards party or something, it’s been a while since you’ve done something useful.

a shout out to beijing defending it’s championship in singapore. the betsy all-star team is sure to dominate as it has in the past.
_________

WEEKLY ITEM #2: Summer League Update

it goes without saying that kevin’s team will clearly be the favorite to win both 2008 and 2009 busl championships. however, this year is sure to be full of surprises and suspense. new talent has flooded the scene making the results of tonight’s draft particularly exciting. some questions to ponder while awaiting team announcements tomorrow.

will kelly and mike, relative newcomers to the captaining world, change the face of busl after coming off an impressive china nationals with bang?

will longtime resident cdice and hangtime star xiao zhi gel to challenge their big brother led opponents?

will margaret and tao work out an elaborate and needlessly complicated array of potential draft outcomes to simulate every conceivable result thus statistically guaranteeing victory, only to have tao relapse on a baijiu binge and boot all over his laptop?

will alicia and kevin be drunk before the draft begins?

_________

WEEKLY ITEM #3: Lunch time Poll

beijing is alive with love, and the frisbee community is finally getting some action. which of these new couples makes you the least sick?

a) taolicia – since they have never touched each other in public, betsy is only assuming they are actually a couple.

b) kevace – the massages don’t leave much to the imagination. at least she’s never been seen giving him one, which makes it a little easier to stomach.

c) charloc – just the name makes betsy throw up a little. does he sit around with a pipe wearing only a smoking jacket, telling her it’s elementary my dear?

d) barbinghui – they do look awfully cute together, although they are arguably the most openly affectionate.

cast your votes!

_________

and finally, your moment of zen, a retrospective look at the evils of baijiu.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2007195&id=1378740071

catch you on the field,
betsy

Chirona returns!

Clearly I still read Betsy's e-mails every week since Providence just isn't as exciting as Beijing Ultimate. For all the new people this summer who don't know me, I've made the album visible to everyone, so enjoy! Thanks for the facebook messages though!

Here's the link again: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2007195&id=1378740071

You should all thank Betsy for reminding you of such evils as drinking lots of Baijiu is definitely a poor choice, right Tao?

Missing Beijing and Betsy,
~Chirona

Runner-up post -- and this could ONLY have been written by this girl:

Found a kitty in the rain
Hey Beijing Ultimate,

I found a kitty in the rain yesterday. Its about 3 months I think. It's a super adorable little boy, white and orange, and loves to cuddle. I think it was abandoned because when I found it, it looked as though it had been out for a while. Thanks to Barbie, my super excellent cat friendly neighbor, I was able to bathe it and now its fur is super nice and purdy.

Unfortunately, it has an eye infection that seems to be getting worse. The over the counter eye meds for pets that I bought I think further aggravated the eye and I'm terribly concerned for the kitty. More importantly, I have a bunny that needs to pass its health inspection and so I have to keep the two separate and watch them very carefully. Being a double duty mommy is tough so I'm appealing to the Beijing Ultimate community for help.

If anyone knows of a) a loving soul - permanent or temp home, b) cheap but reliable vet in the xizhimen area or c) a no-kill shelter or rescue, please let me know.
