WEEK IN REVIEW: Getting ready for a full weekend

Tomorrow, Jehan performs in improv, and Kevin's new band has a gig. This week: we all tried avoiding getting sick, though some failed.

Tuesday, a bunch of Big Brother ladies, in celebration of their season, "got awesome" at Enoterra's ladies night.

Dray and Tory continue to terrorize Beijing -- Great Leap, Yunnan restaurant, El Nido -- and the biggest thunderstorm Beijing's seen in several decades washed through last night. Trivia still got 42 people though. Amazing.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK:

This month -- around this week sometime -- Ovid and Ziggy turn one.

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

WEEK IN REVIEW: The most incredible game of roto caps ever

Monday was Qingming (Tomb-sweeping) Festival, which meant we all had the day off and spent it at Chaoyang Park playing some beer frizz before getting Sultan for dinner and going to Kevin's new apartment for roto caps. Then this happened:

We were down to our last game of roto for the night, and it was Jim and Andy (7 individual wins) vs. Sam and myself (6 individual wins). The cross-game featured Kevin and Alicia and a couple others, but for the purposes of this story, they don't matter.

Andy and Jim go up 1-0, and Jim counters one of my shots. Fair enough. They go up 2-1 when I counter one of Andy's shots, only to have Jim double-rebut me. Fair enough.

We tie it at 2, and that's when things get silly. I proceed to hit THREE CAPS with the game tied at 2. Jim counters ALL THREE SHOTS. After the fifth rebuttal of the game -- TO THREE POINTS, mind you -- everyone goes nuts. The other game practically stops to watch. Jim can't stop laughing. I'm incredulous. Moments later, Andy hits, and my rebuttal goes off the rim.

CAPS MADE THAT GAME:
Sam, 2
Andy, 4
Jim, 5
Tao, 5
POINTS THAT GAME:
Sam, 2
Andy, 3
Jim, 0
Tao, 0

Un-fucking-real. 16 total caps made in a game to 3. Put this one in the Hall of Fame.

(For the record, Kevin and Alicia were up 2-1 over Angela and Nina that game when it ended. Somehow they made 3, during which span we made 16.)

Oh, and that win gave Andy the overall night win over me, 8 points to 6.

Well, we haven't done this in a while ...

EMAIL OF THE WEEK:

Tao, to Stuart Ralston's comment about Rebecca Black (to Rob Hogg's YouTube link (to Mike Shyu's email asking for English teachers)), 4/7:

I've been thinking a bit about Rebecca Black in all the wrong sexual ways recently and I've come to the conclusion that she raises a very pertinent eschatological question: what happens if Saturday does not come after Friday, and yesterday was not Thursday when today is Friday? What if these "days" are all arbitrary tags masterminded by the Great Blogger Above to keep us from realizing our free will to "make up [our] mind[s] / [over] which seat [we can] take"? Would Rebecca Black's eyes then be sunken coals wherein demons of the planet Anareta lurk as antipodes to all our earthly creation?

I am reminded of the poem by Linda Pastan, "In a Northern Country," in which "yesterday in a northern country / my last aunt died," and "the litany / of months, September ... October ..." drags on, tiring the writer to "the way the seasons / keep changing." I can't help thinking that Rebecca Black too is tired of the way our days merge into the next day, Friday to Saturday, and before Friday, Thursday; how nights become a sort of purgatory where our sun -- which is not really the sun, you understand, but a symbol of individual ego in a universe hurtling toward destruction -- may decide, one day, "to hell with it, I'll stay here." Would we then thumb our desktop calendars to the next page? What is "next day"? What is anything.

WEEK IN REVIEW: It's Jeff Orcutt week

If you don't know, Jeff is leaving us after the weekend, which means we're doing everything we can to make him miss us so much that he'll be back in six months. To wit:

Friday night: BCD, Fubar, Maggie's... for Jeff.
Saturday morning: brunch at Wally and Maria's... for Jeff.
Saturday night: Sultan's for dinner, then the bars... for Jeff.
Sunday morning: brunch at Chef Too... for Jeff.
Sunday night: dinner at Ken and Steph's, with Joe and Baby Girl cooking... for Jeff.

Now, Jeff, don't be an asshole and leave.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK:

Until people start sending me the pictures they take, you're going to get cat pictures. Sorry, but cat pictures are the shit.

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:
Before the man goes silent (on this blog, at least) forever... Jeff Orcutt, 11/16: parting is such sweet sadness (not sure that's how the original quote goes, but whatever):

Hey y'all,

This is my last week in Beijing. You know what that means. In addition to much rejoicing from the ultimate frisbee community over my departure there will be a going away party. Please block off a space on your calendar from 8:00pm Friday evening until 4:00am on Saturday morning.

Plans have not been finalized, since I am tired of planning stuff (read: ideas welcome), but there is a kind of fitting symmetry to ending at our favorite BCD restaurant next to DZM. Please stay tuned to the list serve for confirmation on the details.

I have also heard rumors about visiting a certain bar that sells hotdogs out front as I have never been there in the five years I have lived in Beijing.

I hope to see you all there and since many people don't check the list serve please spread the word.

I will miss you all so come celebrate with me!

Jeff

P.s. I have two months membership at the Powerhouse Gym at DZM's Kenzo/Ginza mall for sale (what a location). Please contact me if you are interested.

WEEK IN REVIEW: Preparing for Singapore

Beijing Big Brother's sending a team to Singapore, and Ken Su will be representing the city as well on last year's defending champs, Mo'chi. Results, pictures and recap after the weekend, when I'll be on Singapore's free, unrestricted and fast hulianwang.

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

From Sandy Wang, Beach Ultimate/ Beach Volleyball, 9/14:

Hello,

For everyone who wasn't able to make it to Singapore this weekend, we have a great alternative.

Beach Ultimate! or Beach Volleyball!

The pools no longer have water, but the sand is open and plenty of space for 2 beach fields for ultimate. There are also 2 beach volleyball courts. Basically first come first served. If we get there around 11-12 and with a large group it'll be ok. There is no one there except for those playing beach volleyball. Its all open space. There is a space for soccer, but we can move the goals. There is 2 large areas we can set up for 2 courts.

So pull out your speedos and bikinis, buckets and spades, and bring a picnic for the day. You can buy drinks there (but pricey) and there is an area to wash off the sand.

*Where: *Chaoyang Park - Beach Park 沙滩娱乐园

*What:* RMB 30 for the whole day (if you pay at the park's main gate, when you purchase this ticket you do not need to pay the regular RMB5 park entrance fee).

*When: * this Saturday 11am.
*
*We can have a little beach tournament (4 on 4)if we have enough people. Let me know if you are interested, We already have enough people for one team.*

WEEK IN REVIEW: Cats (it's been a slow week)

A quiet week of business as usual.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK:

Beijing Ultimate players got three new cats this past week. One of them is in the Google Groups post below. The other two are here:

More pictures later.

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:
Aurora Yao, 8/22:

Hi Beijing Ultimate,
I found a kitty right in front of my door this morning. I barely know anything about cats, but she or he looks healthy and absolutely adorable. I just fed her. She seemed pretty hungry. Unfortunately I can't adopt her since I have a dog at home... if anyone you know is interested please reply to me. Thank you!
