WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Three days of disc in Manila

The biggest tournament in Asia (excluding Japan), Manila Spirits, concluded yesterday, with Big Brother winning the 9-pool (9th place) after two grueling days of disc -- not counting that third day, Friday, when the men and women won tournaments with their respective teams, China United Ultimate Party and Hong Kong Junk. Ken Su of Ken Su fame led his mixed team, Ninja Cowboy Bear, to the quarterfinals of the A bracket.

Big Brother lost its first two games, to Shiock and Sexual Chocolate, before rebounding with a two-point win over Extreme. In a strange "cross-over," which was an illogical reseeding of teams based on pool-play point-differential, Big Brother played Sexual Chocolate again in the crossover, losing 11-9.

On Sunday, Big Brother rolled SProaches, a team of several Sunken Pleasure players, and beat Korea handily to reach the finals of the B bracket -- where it played Extreme, again. (To give you an idea of how messed up things were, Sexual Chocolate played Shiock -- beating them on universe point -- in the A-pool quarterfinals.) Big Brother won 15-12.

HHH won female MVP of the B bracket, while Nicki Fung was honored as a B-pool Mythical Seven selection.

Tao and Zach Fanders got medals for executing a greatest. Zach also got one for his costume, which we'll show you in the days to come.

Baby Girl was given the Big Brother team disc by Jim (on behalf of Joe) for his outstanding play all weekend.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Wuhan Open champions

In front of at least 1,000 people in the main sports stadium at the Wuhan Politics, Economics and Law University, Big Brother beat a team of South China all-stars 15-9 to take the trophy of the first ever Hubei Province Ultimate Frisbee Tournament.

Big Brother took half 7-1 behind several well-placed hucks before South China turned up its game, making for a thrilling (and even) second half. The crowd had a good time, at least.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Big Brother: beach tourney winners

Champions

Big Brother won the 1st annual Naipao Tires Dalian Beach Tournament over the weekend, winning round-robin games by scores of 13-3, 13-1 and 13-2. In the finals, Big Brother defeated a team of Chinese all-stars 15-4, though the Chinese players gave an all-out effort with massive layouts just about every point.

Naipao Tires was our sponsor, which was a curious choice considering a) we were on a beach and b) none of us drive cars. The emcee asked Jim to do a few monkey-like things, which he was happy to do like the simian he is. Later, the mayor swung by and Jim was asked forced to ask the mayor to sign a Frisbee. I think the expression on Jim's face here says it all:

Bemused -- not. (Picture by Chirona.)

We should point out here that Jim was our unofficial spokesperson all weekened. He conducted two television interviews and countless others for print. They kept asking him things about the tournament, such as -- just before finals -- "So, how many teams were in this tournament?

"Well," he said, "this is the final game. The rest of the teams have been eliminated."

The two other teams -- both from Dalian -- had indeed been eliminated, leaving Big Brother and the Chinese all-stars.

The reporter said, Ahh.

Many of us had a chance to meet the mayor, and here is me standing right next to him as the press snapped photos around us. I couldn't decide whether to put my arm around the guy.

Kansas City Royals, represented... I'm so dirty because of a layout-D attempt on Richie during a "showcase game," really a "showcase point" (or three) put on for the sake of the mayor and his entourage, and the press. Mike Shyu got scored on to end the showcase.

Here is an article about the tournament.

Big Brother players got a certificate and a disc as a prize. Later, Doc speculated that we should have named ourselves "Fuck Tires" and had that written on our shirts. In all the interviews, all we'd allow ourselves to say was, "Fuck tires." That could've been funny, I guess.

(At the end of Saturday, Doc also wondered, aloud, whether it would be rape if, in the process of having consensual sex with a girl, one said, "Hey, I'm raping you now.")

The runners-up:

And... group shot!

The party on Saturday could've been pretty spectacular, except perpetual fog made it impossible to launch the fireworks Dalian's players had bought. We drank, then went to a public bathhouse where I beat Sam in Chinese chess while naked. Then we ate and returned to the beach, where Jim, Sam, Chirona, et al. sang K'naan's Waving Flag song until every Chinese person basically rushed the stage and danced and danced.

Perpetual fog on Saturday:

Those tractors were there to scoop away oil-infested sand.

The party went on:

Then we played Chinese games under a tent until about 2 a.m. while light rain fell.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Shanghai Open 2010 wrap-up

Big Brother finished tied for 3rd at Shanghai Open, going 2-2 on Day 1 and then losing in semis to eventual champs Korea, 13-4, on Day 2. See the China Ultimate blog for more details.

Big Brother results:

SATURDAY

vs Tianjin, W 11-7
vs Southwest China, W 10-9
vs Shiock, L 6-8
vs Shanghai HuWa, L 5-11

SUNDAY

vs Hong Kong, W 11-4
vs Korea, L 4-13

Congratulations to Jim, who was selected onto the Mythical Seven all-star team. He's in line with Alec, here:

Then he and Joe and Panoy of Sunken Pleasure (tourney runners-up) did this:

Danced in one pair of shorts. Five Ultimate, where would we be without you?

And Big Brother, as LARPers, didn't win the party because...? (Amos and his Southwest China team danced three straight hours in diapers...)

Video to come. It was entertaining.

And we would be remiss without mentioning Beijing Bang, which, without either Ken Su or Mike Shyu, finished 2nd in the C Pool on Day 1 and lost in pre-quarters on Sunday to Tianjin Speed.

POSTSCRIPT: Congratulations to me, who had a greatest on my first point (down 2-1 to Tianjin Speed), then followed with a toe-the-line catch for score; a Callahan in Gm 2 and a layout catch for score on Universe Point; and a stomach virus. Yes, a stomach virus. Let the correlation or causation debate begin.
