WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Kevin's band, his band, his band

Newly rechristened Loveseat, Kevin and Jon Kelly played a two-hour gig at Luga's on Saturday night, and it was pretty great. Short video clip here:

It was also Sam's birthday. His face newly rechristened after a bar fight, Sam got, predictably, wasted once again.

On Friday, some kids had a naked party. I won't go into details.

On Sunday, we went to the pool at Chad's. Our winnings from the Nanjing Open have officially been (well) used.

WEEK IN REVIEW: Shanghai wrap-up

Big Brother will have a boozy Chinese dinner (BCD) tomorrow to celebrate the end of its spring/summer season, which ended with the team -- you may have heard -- winning Shanghai Open last weekend. Kevin Reitz has recently posted a blog about the event titled "How Beijing Owned Shanghai in 2011." The party was his "Opus."

Meanwhile, Gina of Korea and Zahlen visited this week, and Korea's Dray and Tori are in town.

PICTURES OF THE WEEK:

From Zahlen and Gina's Wednesday "BCD" at Dongbeiren Restaurant (not a real BCD cause the restaurant took away our caps).

PICTURES OF THE WEEK, part 2:

Some of the better pictures from last weekend of Big Brother came from Vince of Shenzhen, who, in addition to the GIF linked to below, also got a nice GIF of Ginny's layout D and Pia's layout. He also took these photos:

Dray's poach D

Jim a bit late to help on Dray

Ginny and Zahlen

Tao D'ing some Korea guy

Gareth catching it on Derek Ramsay in the finals

Rumor has it that Stallion took about 800 pictures on Mike Shyu's camera. It remains to be seen whether those are better than Vince's.

RETROSPECTIVE: Tianjin Open 2011 party ... or, This is what happens when you challenge Big Brother to a drink-off

Above two pictures by Kevin Reitz

The party theme was "Rainbow," which is why Tao (and a few others) dressed in all white. Well, Tao was dressed as a prism, to be exact.

Big Brother would go on to win this thing. For more on the tournament, see here.

And what would a Tianjin party be without a boat race? Here is Jim starting off the first race:

And here's Baby Girl and Tao winning one for Big Brother, after Jamie and Micah failed to get the job done in the video above.

WEEK IN REVIEW: St. Patrick's Day shenanigans

Before we mention what happened after trivia on St. Patty's Day, here's Global Times' piece on Jim as part of its ongoing "Who questions the quizmasters" series:

Name: Jim (aka "Jimmy Neutron") Kirchhoff

Age: Would you still believe 16?

Quiz: Souk [editors' note: currently defunct - for now at least - Jim has found temporary refuge under Kro's wing]

Amount of years in Beijing: Eight

Strengths: The gift of gab.

Weaknesses: Kryptonite.

I'm running a quiz in Beijing because: I crave the spotlight.

Specialty?subject: Girls.?Who am I kidding? I run a quiz....

How come no girls run quizzes? Because the guys would never stop hitting on them.?It would be like wolves stampeding toward an injured rabbit.

How do you rate the competition? In answering questions, I give them the edge. In entertaining a crowd, get in line, boys.

How do you rate your chances? Terrible. I'm just here for the free beer.??

Our odds: Worryingly, Jim is under the impression that his weekly "banter" as compere of a local quiz ranks as entertainment. For that alone, we're worried whether he might have a touch of Charlie Sheen Syndrome and start talking about "earthworms entering his immortal octagon" or some such. That said, we quite like Charlie Sheen - but we still feel the need to punish Jim for his unfailingly US-centric quizzing. 14-3

After the quiz we hit up Great Leap Brewery, met up with Zach at Stumble Inn and played pool at Cheers.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK:

And a video!

The first-place team chose to do a chug off to determine the champion. And for the second straight week, that team lost.

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Pink Party, Jump, Jive, and Super Quiz, Oh My!

On Friday select members of the Beijing Ultimate community went to this bar and bought pints and then growlers and got drunk ... off beer! For the first time in a long time. Then it was off to Zahlen's for the Pink Party, which proved horrendously fun as always, and someone may or may not have closed Chocolate.

On Saturday, after pickup, Mike and Helen (and Emma!) Shyu (but mostly Mike and Helen) hosted their annual Jump, Jive and hey someone kill the Turkey Already Thanksgiving dinner (their seventh time doing it, actually). Mike gave a heartfelt speech about the meaning of family and then we dug into the meal, which was so big everyone had leftovers. (A few days later the Shyus hosted another mini-feast to get rid of their leftovers). Pictures below provided by the estimable Kevin Reitz:

And finally, to top off a wild weekend, Jim and I hosted the Image round at the Beijinger's Super Quiz at Hard Rock Cafe. The Beijinger's write-up of the event is here, and this is a live blog from Beijing Boyce. Here's Jim during the first round:

This is more or less how our round ended (at the 51-second mark, you'll recognize a certain clip that appeared last Halloween; answer at the bottom):

And because we were up first, we spent the rest of the quiz night getting drunk on Tiger (then Stella) beer. Here we were at the end (yes, Jim is wearing that):

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Autobots, Deploy! play their final show ... and Halloween!

Josh of Ellen fame held a raucous Halloween party on Saturday, an event on the Beijing Ultimate calendar eclipsed in significance only by Kevin and Jeff of Autobots, Deploy! fame's final show. We took about 20 videos (ok, more like 18), the first 10 of which start here:

I'll post the rest in a retrospective a little later.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP, pt. 2: BUSL finals -- pics and vids

UPDATE, 8/11: Facebook album.

The results are in from the 4th annual Beijing Ultimate Summer League.

In the semifinals on field 2, Huck took a 7-4 lead on Burn and looked to take half when a dropped pull and a first-throw turnover -- on successive points -- led to consecutive breaks for Burn and a 7-7 tie.

Huck did eventually take half, but Burn had seized the momentum and ran off with six straight points to take a 13-8 lead after intermission. Huck made a small run to make it 13-10 before Burn scored the next two to pull off the upset win.

On field 1, undefeated Pillage beat Bid 15-4. The game was relatively close at 9-4 before Pillage decided to redouble the pressure.

In the 3rd place game, Bid used a zone to slow down Huck's attack and won 12-9.

The finals started out close, but Burn threw away a couple of points and Pillage, doing what they do best, took full advantage of every mistake. They ended up winning 15-9, running their record to 8-0 with a +68 point differential. Pretty dominant indeed.

Videos of three of their points:

Team Bid... started 0-5, ended 2-6. Not bad.

Until next year, Beijing Ultimate summer leaguers....

POSTSCRIPT: This was after a pretty good party on Friday at Solutions, which you can read about here.
