WEEK IN REVIEW: Onwards to Manila

While we bask one last time in Big Brother's win in Wuhan, word has leaked out about the party theme at Manila Spirits. We're not going to reveal anything just yet, but let's just say the ideas are flowing, and they're pretty fantastic.

EMAIL EXCHANGE OF THE WEEK:

Really, the winner is Liz. But we'll get to that in a bit.

Now find me someone whose head fits inside your jaw.

Face paint sounds about as cool (or creatively bankrupt) of a theme as glasses. I have an idea: Everyone dresses up as a different animal trainer, and brings that animals' costume. Then we'll go find some women "that we can pay for their services" to dress up as the animals (trust me, it won't be hard). It would be awsome.

WEEK IN REVIEW: A busy weekend ahead

First, happy belated birthday to Joe, who turned 26 on Tuesday. We celebrated at Souk trivia night, where it was 60 rmb-all-you-can-drink but not nearly as messy as the first time.

Tonight's Big Brother's post-Hong Kong team dinner, to be held at the normal Boozy Chinese Dinner place at 7:30. Afterwards we'll head to Jiangjinjiu Bar near Gulou (Drum and Bell Towers) to hear Autobots, Deploy! play for perhaps their last time. (Rumor has it that Jeff Orcutt is leaving us forever. Details to come as they become available.)

Tomorrow, a bunch of us will be going to Jehan's improv show while wearing our Halloween costumes. Others of us will be going to a party at Josh's place, guaranteed to be awesome because he's in the process of obtaining an ice luge.

A very, very busy weekend culminates with practice on Sunday at BCIS. Yes, we've officially moved indoors for the winter ... or have we?

In other news, China's central heating system -- namely how it's NOT ON -- can go fuck itself.

Oh, and Alicia's back from Shenzhen for the weekend. Welcome back, Alicia!

From Jim and Tao's final ever trivia at Souk Lounge (bar is moving places, and we may be moving our quiz... stay tuned).

In lieu of GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK, we have...

EMAIL OF THE WEEK:

Chirona, 10/23:

Dear Friends and Family,

In memory of my friend Paige who passed away this summer, we have established an endowment fund through Brown. The fund has two main goals: one, to provide money for travel, tournament fees, etc... for those students who cannot afford them to still be able to play Ultimate, and two, to honor Paige's commitment to community service by donating money from the fund each year to a community service organization of the Ultimate team's choosing.

Attached is a more detailed description of the fund, and further information and donation instructions can be found on the fund's website: www.PVHfund.org.

Additionally, I am currently working on getting Paige V. Hicks memorial discs created, which we will be mailing out as a thank you for donations as well as selling to raise further funds.

I encourage all of you to donate even just a few dollars because every little bit counts.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you in advance for your support in helping all of us to honor Paige's life.

With Love,
Chirona

WEEK IN REVIEW: People are headed to Manila

Big Brother is preparing as we speak to train down to Dalian tonight to participate in this weekend's Dalian tournament. Rumor has it that the final is pre-determined as Shanghai vs. Beijing, a rematch of last year's final that saw Shanghai pull off an incredible and impressive upset victory.

The party theme is "glasses." Should we even try?

PICTURES OF THE WEEK:

Souk Trivia every Tuesday night. Jim and I host! Please come. The prizes are amazing, as you can see:

GOOGLE GROUPS POST OF THE WEEK:

Jehan caused a few people to re-book their flights when he posted the following on Sept. 5, titled, "1000 RMB round trip Manila Flights - Today only":

Cebu Pacific is having a ridiculous deal, 50% off international flights. Currently a round trip ticket Beijing-Manila is just over 1000 RMB all inclusive. This is also for other locations in Asia, so I think I'll be off to Japan afterwards for all of $70. Flights 10/1- 11/30, must book today, so go do it right now!

Yay for Hong Kong folks boycotting the Philippines!

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: The return of Liz Lin

After practice Saturday, Jim, Alicia and Tao hosted an Ultimate Frisbee event at a German Center festival. We were treated to free German beer and pretty decent sausages, though the place ran out of food too early and the lines were too long.

A good time all around though, sorta.

Afterwards, Ellen held a chill party at her place to welcome the return -- for a few weeks -- of Liz Lin, who has her own tag on this blog. Check out that crazy girl's antics.

More on her later, I'm sure.

RETROSPECTIVE: Remember when this girl was here?

So long ago...

(She left us on Sunday for Chicago, which, in her words, is "dreary.")

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: A bittersweet party for Beijing Ultimate

Barbie Reed

We'll have a tribute video up in the coming days, but for now these pictures of Barbie's going-away party will have to suffice. Also, Kevin's got a post up on his blog, and if you don't believe he and Therese were the most impressively dressed on the night (though Sandy and Baby Girl were impressive in their own way), go read what he had to do get ready

Pink Party 2009!

It was also Liz's last night in Beijing.

Lots of debauchery we can't write about in this space.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP, part 1: It is now legal for this girl...

...to drink in the United States. Happy birthday, Liz! You have made Jim very happy.

After the Korean BBQ dinner in the Wu we went a few blocks down the street to D-22, where Jeff and Kevin's band, Autobots, Deploy!, played in front of a lively crowd. Videos to come later, but first:

And then we ended up in Propaganda until 5 a.m. What happens in Propaganda, especially past midnight, stays in Propaganda, such as Jeff hooking up with two college girls who may or may not have been 17*. *This may or may not be a flat-out lie.

But -- hey, look! -- Jim had fun.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Happy birthday, Ken and Steph!

Backdated 10/21

The girl with the butcher's knife is Steph, and Ken Dry is the one in blue. They are a couple, and isn't it always so cute when couples share a birthday? Who's a cute couple... that's right, they're a cute couply wouply.

On Friday night they had a birthday gathering at a Xinjiang restaurant across from Worker's Stadium. Afterwards we walked over to Paddy O'Shea's to see The Redbucks, currently the hottest bluegrass band in town, featuring Beijing Ultimate's own Chris Boehner, et al.
