WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Three days of disc in Manila

The biggest tournament in Asia (excluding Japan), Manila Spirits, concluded yesterday, with Big Brother winning the 9-pool (9th place) after two grueling days of disc -- not counting that third day, Friday, when the men and women won tournaments with their respective teams, China United Ultimate Party and Hong Kong Junk. Ken Su of Ken Su fame led his mixed team, Ninja Cowboy Bear, to the quarterfinals of the A bracket.

Big Brother lost its first two games, to Shiock and Sexual Chocolate, before rebounding with a two-point win over Extreme. In a strange "cross-over," which was an illogical reseeding of teams based on pool-play point-differential, Big Brother played Sexual Chocolate again in the crossover, losing 11-9.

On Sunday, Big Brother rolled SProaches, a team of several Sunken Pleasure players, and beat Korea handily to reach the finals of the B bracket -- where it played Extreme, again. (To give you an idea of how messed up things were, Sexual Chocolate played Shiock -- beating them on universe point -- in the A-pool quarterfinals.) Big Brother won 15-12.

HHH won female MVP of the B bracket, while Nicki Fung was honored as a B-pool Mythical Seven selection.

Tao and Zach Fanders got medals for executing a greatest. Zach also got one for his costume, which we'll show you in the days to come.

Baby Girl was given the Big Brother team disc by Jim (on behalf of Joe) for his outstanding play all weekend.

RETROSPECTIVE: The Shoes' magic

Retrospective has just moved to Wednesdays. New time, same place.

Mike Shyu and Ken Su teamed up this past Sunday and recreated their magical chemistry or whatever it is they've got going, making it to the finals of another tournament (and winning!). Catcher in the Sky was 1-4 during the regular season, but all that matters is they went 2-0 on Sunday.

It reminded us of the China Nationals tournament in May, when Ken and Mike led Beijing Bang to an unexpected 2nd-place finish, beating 2-seed Shenzhen in quarters and the 3-seed, defending champion Air Kazak, in semis before falling to 1-seed Hong Kong.

Here's your reminder that yes, it did happen, because in sports you never know what might happen.

And your reminder that Balance's video of this game is now live.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP, part 2: All hail the champions!

f
Champions: Catcher in the Sky, captained by Mike Shyu and Kelly Yang. Back row, left to right: Qi, Ken Su, Nick Liu, Hsing-hui Hsu, Marc Zeiger-Guerra, Lincoln, Shen; front row, left to right: Edward Wang, Matt (王敏), Veronica Lee, Kelly, Mike

Somehow, Mike Shyu, Kelly Yang and Ken Su did it again. Just as at China Nationals, when the threesome led Beijing Bang, the 7-seed, on an unforgettable run through the tourney's 2 and 3 seeds, on Sunday they again ruined everyone's brackets by taking an underdog with no business getting out of the first round on a wild ride to finals.

Only difference is, this time they won.

Deploying a sharp zone anchored by a tireless cup, Catcher in the Sky, in blue, upset the league's top team, Alchemy, in the semis before going toe-to-toe with the league's second best team, Hello Sexy (black), in a spirited and immensely entertaining finals. Sexy took two early leads but never pulled away, and with the game tied at 4, Catcher's zone finally bared its teeth to induce several drops and throwaways. Catcher took half 7-4 to the shock of all the spectators.

"I thought Black would roll through them," Alchemy co-captain Kevin Reitz said. He should have known better. With Shyu and Yang leading a team that included strong women (Veronica, Helen, HHH) and top-flight men (Shen, Lincoln), Catcher's performance -- though a surprise -- didn't defy belief. Asked how he beat Alchemy, Shyu smiled and shrugged, "We played our game."

It was more of the same after intermission, Catcher playing a mixture of man and zone and getting stronger with every forced turn. Hello Sexy strung together several impressive drives, but in the unforced turns caught up to them eventually, especially as Catcher often used long hucks to turn the game's momentum on a dime.

Soft cap was called at 10-8. Catcher scored to make it 11-8 before Sexy scored, then won a hard-earned upwind break to make it 11-10. Catcher put on its universe line and marched the disc down the field with ease. Appropriately, co-captain Mike Shyu caught the game's final point, a beauty of a floater that offered itself in the waning light of a late-summer Beijing evening.

Here's the first in a series of nine videos featuring Catcher (semis vs. Alchemy):

Part 1 of 8 of the finals between Catcher and Hello Sexy, a sweet zone point:

Part 2: Hello Sexy marches it down; Part 3: Ken Su and Joe chat it up

Part 4, a long and incredibly entertaining point:

Part 5, first point after half, Catcher up 7-4 and Hello Sexy on the move...

Part 6: Jim huck to Andy for the score (Alicia filming); Part 7: Catcher up 11-8, game to 12

Part 8, finals point!

A reminder, in case you didn't see the previous post, that there are two BUSL Facebook albums for public perusal, of finals and the party.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Exhausted and sunburnt

CUUP did not win Singapore Open, but it got medals...

...for winning B pool.

Sunken Pleasure and Disk Knights, who came out of CUUP's pool into the A bracket, both made semifinals.

More later. For now, check our sister site, China Ultimate, and find yourself humored by Ken Su:

Date: Aug. 6, 2009
Subject: C.U.U.P. - Armament and Supplies Procurement Department Report ...

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all doing well and following Milan/Tao's eating suggestions (myself I had a healthy bit of airport KFC for breakfast - may be a couple days late according to the schedules but I will consider it part of the protein loading piece).

I am pleased to report that the gear for Saturday is now all sorted and is now fully smuggled past customs into Singapore. It was a bit hairy at the Beijing airport this afternoon - the post-911 airport security world is apparently also on full alert cracking down on plastic toy guns and plastic toy knives (oddly enough I don't think these had showed up on the initial bag X-ray as they are all plastic, but the 15 metal flasks did catch a lot of attention leading to a full luggage search where the guns got flagged by some supervisor). Thankfully as with all things in China after long discussions, negotiation fatigue set in and the supervisor actually got some personal phone call and the junior security staff basically decided they were ok provided I promised not to take them out of my bag and threaten people on the plane with them. As luck would have it, the Singaporean customs authority also caught them on scanner on the way out of the airport and the detail oriented Singaporeams insisted on checking each and every flask to confirm they weren't already filled with alcohol or drugs (strangely enough they never bothered to check my two nalgene bottles which have probably more total volume than the flasks for bringing in alcohol).

I got the most applicable sizes for hats, shirts, and tank tops based on the emails received. As well, all requests for belt/flask were filled in accordance with emails also. Hopefully everyone is happy with their loot as I am not sure if we will have time to set up any Customer Service Feedback Desk for complaints or return requests.

Final cost is slightly less than originally quoted for the basic package so Rmb68 is good for the basic package. For those who ordered extra things and those who already had their own shirt, the prices are as follows for you to add or deduct as appropriate from the Rmb68 basic fee:
- T-shirt (Rmb25)
- Plastic gun that shoots darts (Rmb25)
- Plastic Knife (Rmb10)
- Belt (Rmb23)
- Flask (Rmb23)
- Plastic gun that makes shooting noises (Rmb25)
- Goggles (Rmb25)

Distributions and disbursements on Friday in the party dorm room.

Fly safe and see you all soon.

Ken

Also, congratulations to Andrea Cheng, Aaron's girlfriend, who was selected for the tourney's all-star team. Considering there were 24 teams, being recognized as one of the three best women all weekend -- amid awesome female players, if I may add -- is impressive and worthy of a picture.

China United Ultimate Party prepares for Singapore

The Singapore tournament is this weekend, and Beijing is well represented as half of the Beijing-Shanghai C.U.U.P. team. Everything from cheers ("We ... C--.... U.... P....!") to jerseys have been arranged. All that's left is to win.

Oh, and costumes for the party, themed "Freedom." We in the China United Ultimate Party have decided to go our own way with this.

An email from Beijing's Ken Su, dated Tuesday, 6/4, subject: Action Required for all members of C.U.U.P. - An organisation dedicated to the Preservation of the Ultimate Harmonious Society:

Team,

Please respond to this email tonight or latest torrow morning as I am procuring everything tomorrow afternoon for everyone (Trudy, are you sure you don't want anything?).

I have checked out a number of sources and I think within our budget we can do the following:
- Green hat with red star
- Green tank top with red star (for ladies) and Green T-shirt with red star (for men)
- Choice of green/camo cloth belt with metal buckle or black pocket/hip flask with red hammer and sickle logo.

The total cost of this would be Rmb75 (ie. A shade over US$10).

Other potential items which would be cool but would cost extra:
- Replica rifle machine gun with extended stock that shoots rubber sticky darts for supression minor rebellions (Rmb120)
- Replica handgun that shoots rubber sticky darts to supress even smaller rebellions (Rmb50)
- Plastic sub-machine gun which makes machine gun noises to scare protestors (Rmb35)
- Plastic army knife (Rmb10)

Also, negotiated specially for Milan - full helmet interior padding with two visors - one clear and one shaded. Green with red star. Rmb150.

REQUIRED ACTIONS:
(1) I need a response for your approximate size for buying the clothing and hat or I will have to guess (which is tough as some of us haven't met).
(2) I also need a response for whether you prefer a belt or a hip flask.

OPTIONAL ACTION:
Please let me know if you want any of the optional items and I will buy those for you as well.

Thanks,

Ken

Kicking off Betsy Appreciation Week

Here is the definition of a transient community: coming like the warm season, all joy and bravado; leaving on the humped back of a solitary traveler, all sadness, candor; some are never heard from again; others return, bearing newfound appreciation for what they left behind; others still barrack themselves with their memories in a land far away with only a blog and a bottle...

But one person alone in Beijing seems unbound by the mortal coil. She is our better half -- our comprehending eyes, our sense of humor. Without her we would be uprooted and scattered by the winds, maybe to the Siberian desert. We would become unmoored as a rudderless boat in the empty seas.

That person, of course, is Betsy. If you've ever played Frisbee in Beijing it's likely you've met her. And if you're a guy, then she's definitely met you. Hip, modern and sophisticated, among the most well-read people in the world, fashion-savvy, forward-thinking, cute and devilishly funny, she is everyman's dream girl, his aspirations and hopes for a prosperous tomorrow. As such, we thought we'd kick off this blog -- devoted to Beijing Ultimate and the community around it -- with a five-day celebration of the one person this community cannot function without.

We told Betsy about this and she was only too excited to get her voice on the record. Here's part one of two of an interview conducted last month:

First off, Betsy, thanks for taking time to sit down with us. How would you describe yourself in relation to the Beijing Ultimate community? To what extent does it define you as a person?
i think that i define beijing ultimate more than it defines me.

How did you get involved?
pending lawsuits make it impossible for me to answer this question at this time.

We know your knowledge of Ultimate is nonpareil, but have you actually played Frisbee?
you remember the team that beat you in summer league? that was my team. i scored the winning goal. i spiked it next to your head. you have a selective memory.

You've been around a while now, so I was wondering if you could tell us briefly how the Beijing Ultimate scene has changed from your arrival to now.
when i started playing utlimate here, there was one chinese player. his name was duncan. he was our token chinese player for about 3 years. then he got a girlfriend and we never saw him again. now there are lots of token chinese players, so that if one of them gets married, we have lots of other players to take his or her place.

chinese players, be sure to let your friends know that playing frisbee makes you more attractive as a mate.

How would you characterize the community?
inescapable. once you are a part of the beijing ultimate community, you can never escape it. just ask matt flynn. seriously, ask him. his email is imaflynn@gmail.com. he'd love to hear from you.

What is the best part of playing Ultimate in Beijing?
how fast the community is growing.

What is the worst part?
the people

What tournament do you hold the most fond memories of?
i think the best memory is: winning the 2004 singapore tournament, winning the friday night registration party, having the best costumes, coming in seeded 7th and going undefeated, guaranteeing to pat mccarthy before the tournament we would win the tournament no matter where the seeded us, all of these things led us to belief that this victory would be the first of many. and then streaking naked on the fields so that a number of our players could never go to singapore again so that we have never had the chance to defend our title.

The most memorable party?
quinn's thanksgiving day party, the one with the food fight.

Your favorite Beijing couple of all time?
david joiner and michelle

Your favorite Beijing player of all time?
me

Who are the best dancers in Beijing, male and female?
me and jim.

Are Jim and Joe half-brothers?
they are a 6th grade science fair experiment gone horribly horribly wrong.

Why does Sandy not like you? [Not you personally, you understand]
sandy is just jealous of you.

Why is Char so nice?
it's a cover. believe me, you don't want to see her when she gets mad. just ask jim.

Can Ken Su be my uncle?
there is a 38% statistical certainty that ken su already is your uncle.

How can I donate to the Free Happy Rat fund, for his impending arrest and house durance?
i can tell you how, but why would you want to.

Should foreigners in China know Chinese, or is that not necessary?
you mean chinese food? all you need to know is gong bao ji ding.

What's up with Doc?
he's old.

Is it true there's a guy named Boner in the Frisbee community? That's funny, isn't it?
only funny in an ironic way. i know this based on personal experience.

Now, it's no secret you get around. Some people say it's because you have low self-esteem, others attribute your reckless behavior to a dark, traumatic childhood, while even others say you're just a girl who likes to have fun. But I think it's something else. I think you have a special someone you're too shy to approach, so you act out in hopes of attracting his attention and proving to him -- and yourself -- that you're desirable. Who are you saving yourself for, Betsy?
i don't believe in saving myself. that's a patriarchial concept created by males who wanted to have a virgin on their wedding night.

Thank you for your time.
